We have a very old crumbling stone terrace/wall on our property, and we've had some fun trying to "Date" the wall....(MY claim is the 14th century, my wife claims when the house was built in 1929)....in all seriousness, we assumed they were built when the homes were built, but it occurred to me that some may pre-date the homes, and may date back to original property prior to sub-development. The stone wall in our yard looks very similar to the stone walls that make up the Gates on Ridgewood/Hickory. Given their crumbling condition and the extent of vine growth on the walls, it is my belief that they weren't recent additions designed to look old/rustic. Any insight? |

I kind of doubt the walls predate the house. Looking at old photos, including those posted here on MOL, it appears that when an area was cleared for development back in the 1920s everything went, including trees. Prior to suburban development there were a lot of farms in what is now Maplewood. I don't know if the farmers built stone walls ala New England or not. I suspect, because of the rocky soil and the fact many of them settled here from New England, they did. I also I think I recall seeing some at an abandoned homestead in one of the State parks while hiking with Little K and the Cub Scouts years ago. However, I doubt any of the walls survived development. |

Maybe the walls were part of the Roosevelt Estate if they are similar to the gate at Hickory/Ridgewood which I believe were also part of the estate...assuming you are in the general vicinity. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. |
