Circa early 1980's, it was WONDERFUL! They carried everything a homeowner needed and gave great correct advice. Every key they cut worked. Beck's had old wooden floors and lots of kitchen gadgets too. Now it's a Blockbuster.

BRING BACK BECK'S!, or something like it

And the other Hardware Stores that were in Maplewood-- Pietz on the corner of Maplewood Ave/Baker St; Wideker on the end of Parker Ave; and Maplecrest on Springfield Ave. ...and someone on another thread suggested a hardware store go into Maplewood Village. So many stores now carry what you once could only find in a hardware store, not to mention the Home Depots and Lowes...

I remember Beck's!! Very, very well, in fact! They had everything! It was a great line-up....Beck's, Gruning's, Village, Drugs, the tennis shop, Village Photo......seems like ages ago.

Cartman - G.M. Stark's was across the street, I think next to where the bagel place is. A couple doors up was Voss Stationers.

Oh yes - that shoe store!! Right next to Village Drugs, I think. I forget the name of it. (Probably Village Shoes. )

I don't remember the x-ray foot measuring device, though.

And I also remember TJ Marche (where Kokoro is now), Eva from the toy store, and Elizabeth from the book store (it was on Baker Street, and then it moved to Maplewood Avenue). Delia's was here, too, when we moved in (women's clothing, where half of Richard Roberts is now). I still miss Peter's bakery - their baked goods were delicious! Young Cottage had kids' clothing, too. My son used to hide under the racks of clothes.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember GM Stark's having 2 locations: first, where the Sonny's Bagels later took over, & second, across the Ave., further west, by Voss. To confuse matters, I think Beck's also had 2 locations, first one pre-fire near Voss, & 2nd one post-fire across the Ave., east of Voss. Of course, this was the '60's & 70's, so everything was cloudy. I dated one of the Beck girls in high school - mid 70's. I think.

Voss Stationery also had two locations: first where Dunkin Donuts is, and then they moved across the street to where the Goat is now.

The original Beck's location is now a walk-through in the middle of the block. It was an old wooden building but I didn't realize that it was the victim of a fire. I think that the second floor was the first location of the SO Library.

And what about the slanted part of the floor that went from one level of the store down (or up) 12 inches or so to the other?? I can recall toddlers waddling up and running down that wide ramp section, near the phones....what a great store....

remember Bellins (sp??) in South Orange it had two entrances one on South Orange Ave and one around the corner on Voss...they carried kids clothes and were the official boy and girl scout outfitters. Also carried the required gym uniforms for jr high and CHS.

I do remember Young Cottage. They too, had girlscout uniforms.

Remember the Shop Rite that used to have two entrances - one from South Orange Ave. and the other from the parking lot accessible from Vose Ave. Ahhh, those were the days.

Oh, right...the Shop Rite had two entrances, and there was that store on the corner where everyone bought camp supplies. The latter became a decorating store, and then an upscale kids' clothing store, and is now the Goat. (I am probably missing some incarnations, though.)

Remember the store Confetti, which was where Mark Murphy's Music is now? A very chi-chi stationery store, and the place to score birthday presents.

South Orange village used to be really, really nice. Sigh.

Niiice!

I actually did some work for Grunings around 1991-2, when they still had that shop (the one on the hill had already closed). I made a large trade-show standup sign for their hot fudge sauce. The owner's name was Gold...Tom maybe? Can't recall.

There was a Grunings sign hanging in a C-wing classroom at CHS long after Grunings closed. It was an ESL room, on the B-wing side. I can't remember which floor because C-wing did that funny half-floor difference on the D-wing side. I wonder if that sign is still there...

Oh my gosh, Cody,

I worked for Eva at Eva's Toys and Gifts on and off when one of her "regulars" could not be there. This was probably in 1985, but I am drawing a total blank as to exactly when. I think I was already in college and working at Kings at the same time.

How about Ted Lowey...a jewelery store where dunkin donuts is. does anybody remember the molasses pops that they used to sell at Grunnings? they had a chewy taffy-like consistency and they were dipped in dark chocolate?? South Orange in the 60's and 70's was swanky!

Ted Lowey ran for BOT and lost. He said, rather petulantly, that since people wouldn't elect him, he would close his store and move away. And so he did.
