This past weekend I met the Chief of the Leni Lenape for the Philadelphia area. I knew that the Leni Lenape figured prominently in the early history of the area known today as Maplewood but what I didn't know until this past weekend is that there is still a large Leni Lenape community in the Newark area. Does anyone reading this have any information about the modern day Leni Lenape in our community? |

Joan - Have you tried the Newark Library? They can answer just about any question. I had a friend, Bill Myles, who also could answer your question, but I don't know his whereabouts or even if he is still living. I can ask a friend if you wish. |

We do know that Chief Tuscan and his tribe lived here many years ago. Their campgrounds were by the stream by Tuscan Road and near the school - hence the naming of the street and school. |

Galileo: There are several theories about the naming of Tuscan Road. Another version is that it was named for a family from Tuscany, Italy which used to live on that road. Imacgrandma: I would be very interested in any information your friend might have on this topic. Thanks. |

Joan - Tuscanny is absolutely wrong. There is a book called "The Trail to the Upland Plantations" written by Beatrice Herman. It is a wonderful history of Maplewood and South Orange. I lost my original copy but found another copy in the town book store a few years ago.I'm sure the library has it also. There is a fascinating story about Chief Tuskin(Tuscan) as well as other stories about our town's history. |
