Since we moved here in 1980, there has been one space (and only that one space) in the parking area by the train station that is labeled "this space for compact cars only". Does anyone know why? The space isn't smaller or narrower than any other spaces, nor is it limited in back-up distance to get out of it. I've always wondered and never known where to direct the question. So, I thought I'd try here!

Not quite sure if we're talking about the same area, but I'm guessing it's one of the first spaces on the left (park) side of Dunnell Rd, as you make the left from Oakview and head up towards the railroad station.

Dunnell Rd used to be a two way street past the train station. When it became two way, a lot of people took to cutting that corner short, thus a compact car would have a better chance of staying in one piece, particularly after dark.

No,it's further down Dunnell going towards Baker. I think it is a bit past the actual station building, on the park side of Dunnell. It's not near the turn onto Oakview.

But I hadn't realized Dunnell used to be a two-way street (except for when it was temporarily made two-way while Baker was being resurfaced about 10 years back). That must have been interesting!

Cody, I know the space you mean and parked in it many times. :-) Is the sign still there? I kind of took the sign at face value and assumed that it was smaller than the other spaces. Oh well, I will sign this,

That sign has been there for YEARS, and there used to be many of them along Dunnell Road. We need to remember how large cars were when that sign was put up... What was considered a "compact car" then is actually a very large car! Think of how small a Taurus is compared to a 1975 Lincoln Town Car.

There is a really nice wooden castle playground in Chatham. It has a big parking lot, with a small section closer to the playground marked as 'small cars only'.
I parked my Passat on the regular lot thinking it's not really small. A Golf would be.
Funny thing is that all the cars in the small cars section were SUV's. I even saw a Suburban. Guess the drivers are sitting to high up and can't see the sign.

Just came across this thread months later ...

"What was considered a "compact car" then is actually a very large car! Think of how small a Taurus is compared to a 1975 Lincoln Town Car. "

Well in the late 70s - early 80s, small was VERY VERY small!! My first car was a '78 Civic - the old CVCCs, remember them?. Now THAT is a very small car. The Civic I drive now is about twice the size of its great-great-granddaddy.

I bought the '78 in '88 or thereabouts - did I mention that CVCCs were great little cars?
