Do you live in an old house (before 1880)? Would you like to discover what artifacts lay buried in your backyard? I will locate and carefully excavate any old privvies or wells on your property and put the dirt and grass back good as new.

I have an old circa 1870 house with a capped well. Who gets the stuff?

Dear Joso

Sounds promising... I would be happy to carefully excavate the well in good weather.

It would have been common for artifacts to be thrown or dropped into a well. Since the well is on your property, and I'm doing the digging, I
propose that you get first pick of anything that comes out and we alternate picks from there. Does that sound fair to you?

Bottleviking,

That seems fair, however the well is exposed and sealed with a cemented on bluestone cover. I am not sure you would be able to get it off without ruining the cover. What do you think? If you want to come by and look at it, give me (Joe) a call at 212 419 9355. Coincidentally, I was digging in the backyard last week and found what seemed to be an old bottle for a homepathic medicine.

I am not your conventional archeologist.

I am a seeker of that which is lost. I aim to see what remains unseen. To bring to light that which was hidden in darkeness. To awaken that which has been dormant. To hold in my hands that which has not been touched.

When ever I plan a tree and dig a hole, I always find old glass (broken) and old (china) also broken.

how do you go about finding this stuff?

buzzsaw ...

i imagine many rear as well as front yards of the older houselots in both maplewood and south orange, have sheet refuse deposits present. this is in addition to any abandoned wells or cisterns on the properties which might contain items discarded by earlier prior residents.

a controlled, systematic sampling of the yard to determine areas of concentration, and then perhaps a few units of varying size (2.5x5 and/or 5x5 ft) placed in the areas of artifact density, and dug to sterile subsoil, would probably yield results.

of course, most people wouldn't want to dig up their yards in this way unless they were planning a major landscaping effort. if you decide to move forward, happy digging ...

You can also find some cool things when you renovate old homes - we found a Coolidge/Dawes campaing button inside a wall behind a kitchen cabinet.

I found a circa 1950-60 Avon bottle when I was digging up my backyard to put in a patio. I thought I was quite the archieologist (sp?) Lots of cool rocks too.

When we revovated our attic, we found a box concealed in the walls. It contained a former owner's papers, bank statements, personal letters. The family name is Wooley. The most exciting was a bill for dues from the Maplewood CC dated 1924. Any guesses on how much the dues were then?

I'd like for the papers to be on display somewehre if there is interest. Who do I contact or maybe they will just email me.

In a wall of our house, we found two invitations to an army corps reunion dance. The date was 1920. Admission was 50 cents, plus five cents war tax. Very cool.

HarDen - My in-laws name was Woolley. I'm curious about where you live, as they lived on Prospect and on Claremont Dr. before they moved to Sea Girt.
