I'm forwarding this posting I got from the Orange Unitarian Church.
Louis E. Schindel, 84, of Monroe Township, NJ, (formerly of Orange, Maplewood, and Chatham) died on Sunday, May 2. A lifelong resident of New
Jersey, he was active in environmental activities in Essex County and statewide, as a founder of NJ Solar Action, NJ Sun Day, the Maplewood
environACTION Group and a member of the NJ State Councils on Noise Control and Clean Air Control, and State Commissions on Recycling and Ridesharing.
He received the US Environmental Protection Agency's Award of Merit in 1978 and the Maplewood Civic Association's Maple Leaf Award in 1983.

He worked 17 years for the NJ Dept. of Community Affairs'Housing Division as a specialist in urban redevelopment and senior
housing before retiring in 1988. Earlier, he owned and operated the Pied Piper toy and
juvenile furniture store in Union, NJ. He attended the University of Virginia and graduated, at age 53, from Rutgers University (NJ)
with a BA in 1973.

Schindel was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Lieutenant in the US Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater. While serving on a
buoy tender in Okinawa, on April 17, 1945, Louis searched for and found Robert (US Army),
his eldest brother. A treasured family photo records this reunion. He was Chair of the Coast Guard's Salute to the USCG Training Ship
Danmark during the 1976 Bicentennial OP-Sail in New York Harbor.

Schindel's other interests included his family, boating, writing letters to the editor,travelling, family history, being a jokester, and telling stories. He was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Essex County for
over 25 years. Next he served in a leadership role of the
Building and
Grounds committee at the Unitarian Church in Summit.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lotte Schindel, son
and
daughter-in-law Larry and Shirley Hunsberger Schindel of
Bryantown, MD and
their sons Daniel and Joseph; son and daughter-in-law Paul and
Lynn Schindel
of Lawrenceville, NJ and their sons Benjamin, Ethan and Drew; and
son Andrew
Schindel of Plattsburgh, NY. In addition, siblings Robert
Schindel of
Athens, GA, Morton Schindel of Weston, CT, and Elaine Martens
of Murray
Hill, NJ, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Schindel NJ
Memorial,
"Sierra Club Foundation," 85 Second Street, San Francisco, CA
94105. Funeral
services were private; a memorial service will be held Sunday,
May 23 at
2:30 p.m. at Monroe Village, 1 David Brainerd Drive, Monroe Twp.,
NJ.

Wow, I was a member of the environaction group when it started and worked with Lou on the Glassmobile. I was only a senior in CHS and he accepted me like I was an equal with the adults. He even wrote a recommendation for me when I was applying to college. Sorry to hear of his passing.
