Anyone Interested in MAplewood needs to read a few good books. I had never heard of Fosters Creation of a School District book until I used this board... so incase there are other books I DON'T know about, here are all the Maplewood-related books that I've read. (aside from Fosters, I've never read that) Please add if u know of more titles: #1) Maplewood Past and Present, ed Helen Bates; #2) The book which accompanies the Murals in Town Hall. (The librarian will know what you are talking about, I can't remember the title) #3) Creation of a School District, by Foster (someone lend me a copy, I live in New Hampshire!) #4) Olympic Park Book (title forgotten, but available in the history room at Maplewood Memorial Library) #5) "The Marcus L. Ward Home at Maplewood, N.J. With Some References to its Founder and Other Foundations of Similiar Type", by John R. Hardin June, 1928 (Free to lend, I got it off Ebay for $5 or something like that) (Speaking of eBay, also really cool are the 1927 and 1928 Columbia High Year books I off ebay that show class pictures infront of the big front doors, but with building materials strewn all over the lawn. Surely the school had JUST opened days or weeks earlier) One thing I've never been able to locate is the mysterious 1930's "Encyclopaeda" Britanica showing Columbia HS... And I've been looking for a good decade. Perhaps I over looked a set somewhere outside the Library of Congress. John |

Summer Reading reminded me of what everyone does at the town pool... so if someone is there and doesn't mind, can they tell me what year and month of "LOOK!" magazine was the town pool given its award, just pass that information along to me and I might be able to find a copy and post anything relevant. The dates are on a plaque by the exit turnstile. --John |

Extuscan, Foster's book is wonderful, and includes a lot of incidental information about South Orange and Maplewood as well as the school district. For instance, I thought that Maplewood had separated from the Village of South Orange after 1920, but in fact it was the Village that divided itself off, in 1904. It was only later that the Township of South Orange changed its name to Maplewood. I'm not even sure what the title of Foster's book is. On the (borrowed) copy that I have, the cover says "The Evolution of Public Education in a New Jersey School District", the spine says "The Evolution of a New Jersey School District: So. Orange and Maplewood", and the title page says "The Evolution of the School District of South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey, 1814-1927". So take your pick. |

If anyone has a copy of Foster's book and wants to arrange a very-short-term swap, let me know and I'll let to have to read the book on Ward Homestead (which is VERY interesting). Give me a week to read it, photocopy every page (lol!), and we'll swap back again. Obviously this is not a book in an NH library. John mgmagnette@aol.com |
