Sometimes when I put in my zipcode on a website, Maplecrest appears rather than Maplewood. Was this town called Maplecrest and if it was, when and why did it change to Maplewood? |

The Post Office considers Maplecrest to be the "alternate" name for Maplewood, but I don't know why. |

I think the sub-station on SA is called "Maplecrest", or that is what I have always thought. Addresses in that general area come up Maplecrest on the Zip Code locator. At one time Maplewood was part of South Orange and much earlier there were separate villages such as Hilton and Jefferson. I don't think there was ever a Maplecrest. |

Bob K, you are correct about the Post Office branch on Springfield Avenue being designated as the Maplecrest station. I've always wondered what the history of this Maplecrest designation was, too. |

Maybe when Maplewood was trying to wrest itself from South Orange, an independent crest was developed and called "Maplecrest." This is total speculation with no researched basis or any de factum knowledge. |

If I hadda guess I would say because Maplewood begins at the crest of a rather substantial hill. You don't notice it in a car, but ride your bike up SA from Irvington and you do notice it. |
