I consider myself above average on local history, but here's a new one on me.

Ebay auction for a postcard entitled "Methodist Church, Maplewood NJ circa 1908. http://cgi.ebay.com/MAPLEWOOD-New-Jersey-METHODIST-CHURCH-1908-fotopostcard_W0QQitemZ6587251415QQcategoryZ127QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Some of the features appear similar to what is now the Woman's Club - base of the belfry, the second story window. Any have more concrete details?

Hilton United Methodist? That's what I had guessed as well, but I can't confirm it.

I think that it's unlikely to be a church in the Hilton area, because that area was not called Maplewood in 1908. Maplewood was the name of the train stop in what was, in 1908, the Township of South Orange. So this is more likely a building that was later replaced by the current Morrow Memorial building. Does anyone know when Morrow was built?

Morrow has a website. Basically they moved an existing frame building from further up Ridgewood to the current location. There is a picture on the website, but to my eye it doesn't look like the picutre Bill posted.

The picture on the postcard is in Mr. John Harvey's book, "Maplewood". I pulled out my copy and found it on page 105. This is the description -

Quote:

This church originally served as a Baptist church and meetinghouse on the corner of what is now Ridgewood Road and Claremont Avenue. It seved as a Baptist church from when it was built in 1812 until 1846. It was deeded to the Methodists in 1858, who moved the building to Lenox Place where a vesitbule and bell tower were added.

On page 106, there is a postcard with today's Morrow Memorial Methodist Church, where the moved church building can be seen in the background. According to the caption, Morrow Church is named after John I. Morrow, the pastor of the church at the time it was moved.

It looks (to me) like the church on SO Ave, sort of across from the funeral home and Rite Aid.

Well, they moved the church once, what do you think? Was it moved again to Woodland Road and is now the Women's club?

Been doing some web searching, but I'm not finding anything on the history of that building, and just too busy to take a ride by. Anyone in that neighborhood?

I'm pretty sure that the picture is of a church that was on Clinton Ave.

The church that was moved from Claremont Ave (Bear Lane) was moved to Ridgewood and Baker. It's the second building on Ridgewood north of Baker.
