I'm a home-office based freelancer moving to the area and need my DSL. Won't go with Verizon--too many horror stories. Won't go comcast cable modem--again, bad news. Would appreciate any suggestions. |

I also use Speakeasy (thanks to suggestions here by Dave and others) and have been very happy with the service. |

Verizon used to be bad. It's very good now. The service has been utterly flawless for me since June. Not a single shadow of a problem. Many others are reporting the same thing. I got a jumbo phone service package, and DSL cost an extra $30/month, which is a good rate. Tom Reingold There is nothing

It depends. I live in Maplewood, which has comcast. Comcast's reputation isn't so hot. True to that reputation, they sent a fairly incompetent installer to my home when we ordered cable TV. Reports are that cable modem services gives faster downloads. That may be, but speed is adequate for me with Verizon DSL. South Orange has Cablevision, which has a greater percentage of happy customers. I was a happy customer of theirs when I lived in Edison. If you're interested in doing voice over your internet connection, I think you're better off with a cable modem so you don't depend on the phone company. On the other hand, the phone company has lots more experience at wiring than the cable TV companies. If you don't want to run PPPoE, then you'll want cable. If you don't know what PPPoE is, you have no reason to care. If you don't want your IP address to change often, you're better off with a cable modem. If you don't know why you'd care about this, you have no reason to care. With both, I highly recommend getting a home router. And if you get a router with wireless enabled, be sure to enable as many security features as you can. The default settings invite your neighbor to share your connection, and you won't know he's doing it. Tom Reingold There is nothing
