Since moving to Maplewood from the city, I find myself less willing to attend evening networking gatherings in the city that would take me away from my family time. Yet meeting new professionals across different industries is an important part of managing one's career. I have not been successful at finding local events like this in and around maplewood. Are there any organizations with regular gatherings, eg chamber of commerce? |

J123, There are face-to-face gatherings among folks on MOL for entertainment purposes, but I know that they have resulted in new work opportunities for at least two people. The gatherings are posted in the Virtual Café a few days prior and are usually on Fri. nights. |

J123: Years ago, I helped found a Working Woman's Support Group as part of Newcomers. Most of us travelled into the City on the same train and the support group idea just evolved. We talked about our jobs, commuting, being a working parent, adjusting to the community in Maplewood/South Orange and anything else of interest to the members. It shouldn't be difficult to start such a group now. Posting on MOL would be a definite plus in attracting members and working out a series of topics/projects for meetings. The hardest part was relying on word of mouth for membership. We met in each other's homes on dates when we knew everyone was available and took turns planning and presenting the evening's program. This meant virtually no budget and total flexibility. The only currently existing network of working people in Maplewood and South Orange that I am familiar with is a group of people who work in the arts (fine art, music, etc.). They meet regularly and their meetings are announced in the News Record. |
