My son has been going to St. B's for OT to work on his handwriting (he's 5.5). Anyone know of a occupational therapist in the area -- our insurance coverage ran out so I am curious if there are any in Maplewood. He has loves St. Barnabus but it is very hard for me to get an appt.

Hmm. Didn't realize that OTs can help with handwriting. Can they help adults too?

I recently went down that road and was told it is brutally hard to get appts for therapy with these people. It is apparently a burgeoning field! Anyhow, I was given this name by someone to whom I was referred (who was too busy). As I recall, she works in the schools, is just starting out her own private practice (so may be more available) and is really good:

Kristen Clark Benshoff

I think she may be in Livingston.

We used Pediatric Potentials in Livingston for the eval (who will also warn you they are really booked up!), but luckily my child was not recommended for OT at this time.

Good luck.

Thanks! I'm going to give her a call. The people at pediatric potentials were VERY nice but St. B's was covered for free under my insurance (for 60 days). I bought some of the books for the Handwriting Without Tears program and have been working with my son.

My five year old has been doing the workbook (my letters and numbers) and I think it's been really helping him.

Teach the kid to type right away. It opens them up in terms of writing skills later. They don't go through the "how few words can I use to say this" syndrome in grades 2 and 3. And 4 and 5 and 6...
