I am so incredibly frustrated with my job hunt I just had to vent. I have 16 years of solid experience in magazine editing, reporting, writing, with a nice range of skills and some great prestigious employers under my belt...all I want to do is get a job in New Jersey instead of Manhattan, since I am a mom of two young kids and commuting is killing me...yet I am willing to drive up to 45 minutes in NJ...and I am now interested in moving into some form of marketing communications, PR, corporate editorial work. I did this once before -- granted, it was 10 years ago -- on a brief stint away from magazines. I was an AVP at a NYC PR firm. Yet I cannot get ONE NIBBLE. I am looking in my field (finance and commercial real estate) as well as out of it, and I am looking for editorial journalistic jobs as well as marketing/PR/corporate editorial...nothing. I am running up against many jobs that only ask for 5 or so years of experience, and I am just overqualified for them.I feel over the hill and obsolete at the age of 37. It is extremely demoralizing and very frustrating...does anyone else in this phase of their career find the same problem? It's like no one wants to even meet me let alone hire me. I feel like a big fat zero! Anyway, just venting.

I used to work for R.R. Bowker in New Providence. I don't know if that's what you want, but they are a large publisher of indexes, directories and trade journals. They have a couple of other locations in addition to New Providence. Take a look at their Web site...www.Bowker.com.

Thanks for the tip, Lizzie. I just checked and the only editorial thing they have in NJ is for a low-level position asking for 2-5 years of experience...that's pretty much the problem I am running into everywhere. But that's good to know about...I didn't know of this company. Thanks again!

Oh, can I relate! I am a freelance writer/editor looking for something permanent--even part time will do--and I am getting nowhere. BTW, I only have 3-5 years experience and am qualified for so many of the ads I answer but hear absolutely nothing back. I don't even need benefits! What I find frustrating is so many job openings ask for resume, clips, cover letter via email (no phone calls please!). I follow up, everything, and rarely hear back. It's been six months of serious searching for me and no bites!
