No matter past experience or education, returning to the workforce can be daunting for women who have chosen to stay at home with their kids. Their peers have moved up the ladder in terms of position and salary and have continued the valuable practice of professional networking; compensation levels and benefits standards continue to vacillate; opportunities change and industries fail often leaving women with the wrong set of job skills. Still, approximately 84 percent of stay-at-home moms are considering returning to work, according to a survey by Boston-based Reach Advisors. These moms have become know as “sequencing” mothers or “flex-career” women and are being studied by groups like the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Families and Work Institute. Fortunately, employers are waking up to the value of re-capturing the talent and intellectual capital of professional women who have taken time off from the workforce. Accenture, Deloitte, and IBM, among others, all have initiatives to recruit and retain women, even if it means having to let them go for a while. The Career Workshops will provide these women with the tools not only to attract the attention of prospective employers, but find the job which is right for them in terms of compensation, flexibility, benefits and most importantly, job satisfaction. Sessions will include, “How to Reinvent Yourself: Using Your Former Career to Help Define Your Future Career”, “How to Find the Right Job for You: Where to Look and How to Land It”, “Compensation and Benefits Expectations: Current Standards and Practices”, and “Financial Planning: How to Reach Your Goals”. Armed with what they have learned from the workshops, the women will be prepared for the Job Fair & Conference October 26, 2005 at The Metropolitan Pavillion in New York City. Two-tracks of sessions will allow women looking for jobs to hear Best Practices in terms of women’s initiative from employers who are pioneers in the fields; while human resource professionals, recruiting coaches, benefits specialists and career counselors will have an opportunity to hear the latest on diversity, retention and work life balance issues and practices. “What to Do When `Mother’ Is on Your Resume” (www.motherscandoit.com) event series is being produced on behalf of You Can Do It Corp. by New York-based Business Development Institute.
