I don't mean to sound unhelpful but... I know the search engine SUX on MOL but we've done this one a few hundred times. I would say try searching the archives first and see if you can find anything.

Chinese: China Gourmet or Joy Luck in West Orange. Local take-out: Hunan Wok in South Orange

Steak: South Orange Grille

Sushi: Sakana or Ariyoshi in South Orange / Samurai Sushi in Maplewood (and may have jazz now)

South Orange Grille? I thought that closed and is now Village Cellar (until recently known as Lot 15)? Am I thinking of the wrong place?

It is Village Cellar now, and the cuisine is very good.

In my opinion, it's hard to get steak of the quality of Sparks, Ben Benson's, Peter Luger's, in our immediate area, but I may be wrong. I have gone out to Parsippany to the nearest Ruth's Chris's, but I find that chain to be high end institutional and boring.

I like Sono of Millburn for its sashimi deluxe.

You can almost throw a rock in any direction from your house, and it will hit a Chinese take-out place. You need to find one that suits your tastes. I find most of the food not spicey or tasty enough.

I was rude. I'm sorry. I should have started by saying "welcome to town." You will find it enjoyable here.

For Chinese take-out, I like Peking House, on South Valley Road in West Orange; just follow Ridgewood Road north from South Orange and you'll see a CVS shopping center further on up the road (which changes to South Valley Road in West Orange) on the right. And being from NYC, you'll like the fact they deliver! I agree with Innis Owen that folks have different preferences with Chinese food, so you probably need to explore a bit and try your favorite dishes at a few different places.

I've continually found the Search feature incredibly useful. Everyone here on the forum has been incredibly generous over the years in sharing their experiences and recommendations.

Yes, Village Cellar. Thanks for the correction.

Also Dave, did you mean Hunan Garden on Village Plaza instead of Hunan Wok?

Welcome Kennedy - you might also enjoy St. James Gate - an Irish-Type Pub in Maplewood Center - offers live Irish music on Sunday afternoons. TIP: Always substitute Chips instead of Fries.

For a lovely sandwich visit Crane's - they also have some great cheeses.

For steak, there is a Strip House in a hotel in Livingston, I believe. I'm assuming it's the same as the Strip House in the city on 12th Street because the font looks the same. If so, it should be pretty good, since the one in the city is fantastic. I really believe they have the best cheesecake in the world.

- China Chalet in Florham Park is new and is/was one of the best kept secrets (Chinese residents from all over NJ drive to eat there but will depend on what type of Chinese food you like).

- Joy Luck is pretty good for dim sum on weekends... largely also because it's hard to get dim sum to begin with outside of NYC

- Takeout Chinese food at Kam Man Supermarket's cooked food section on Route 10 is very good. A slightly further drive to the Mei Dong (America East) supermarket on Route 22 is pretty good too for takeout cooked food.

- Cathay 22 along Route 22 is very good but pricey.

It is the same as the Strip House in the city-they also own the Monkey Bar which is in the East 50's
