File this under, "Things I never learn." Had a wicked craving for Indian food today, but because I have had the flu for 4 days I did not have the energy to drive to a good place, nor did I want to do the frozen Whole Foods stuff again (it is good, but I wanted fresh). So I tried a takeout at Neelam, thinking that perhaps things had gotten better in the years since I was last there. The food was uniformly bitter and greasy. And way too damned expensive. So disappointing. |

It's definitely too expensive, but the food isn't horrible if you order carefully. By which I mean if you only order chicken tikka, which is usually perfectly edible. Not a replacement for Ragaani, but it's okay for a quick after-work meal. |

Neelam's simply sucks. Why they are still in business is a mystery. People have low standards. ESL, you must have lost more than a few brain cells from your illness to sink that far. |

Fever-addled brain, that is about my only excuse. And a real bad jones for some Indian food. I also don't understand how they stay open. The saag was bitter, the onions in the naan were bitter, and the tandoori chicken was barely edible. The daal, or whatever that was, was beyond inedible. Okay, when will a real Indian restaurant open around here? |

A bad indian meal at Neelam is not NEARLY AS BAD as a lot of the horrible Chinese meals in our area. And yes they are overpriced but in all honesty not nearly as overpriced as ALMOST EVERY mediocre Italian restaurants in our area. An expensive dish at Neelam is what $15 and a normal dish $10? I've had totally bland pasta for close to $20 at almost every area joint. Point being, cut Neelam some slack. You don't like Neelam...ALL OF YOU...we get it. Would I like another cheaper, better Indian restaurant in our area? OF COURSE!!! But until then, why don't you leave all of us courageous eaters who don't mind mediocre Indian food alone. |

When did I say anything about your choice of food? I was bemoaning all about my own reaction to it. You like it, fine, that is your business. That is why kulphī comes in 31 flavors at Baskin Robbins. |

Eats: I didn't mean to imply it was you specifically but I think we all know that BUSTING UPON NEELAM is like everyone's favorite thing to do on MOL. |

Nah, I can think of at least 10 or 20 people, restaurants or things placing higher on my crap list than Neelam. Still, even you call it mediocre...the fact that there are even worse restaurants in the area doesn't move me. I'll happily leave you alone to eat there. Many of us wish for good local Indian, so this discussion naturally comes along from time to time. Many of us go elsewhere to eat good food, while you choose to defend mediocrity, call it courage, and be offended by negative reviews. To each his/her own. |

Whatever Susan... I'll GLADLY praise superiority when its available. FOR INSTANCE, I've often sung the praise of Raagini. It tastes better but it's also more expensive and quite a distance further away. Until the better restaurant comes along, I may occasionally eat at barely-good-enough-but-there-aint-nothing-else-better-Neelam |

Based on recs from MOL, we went with friends to Begum Palace in Madison last night & had a great meal. Beer/wine store just next door too. We hadn't made reservations & it was quite busy (so I'll make them next time), but we were seated after a brief wait...the garlic nan was amazing, along with everything else. |

My favorite local indian food is the readymade Maya Kaimal vindaloo suace from Whole Foods with chicken, and the balsami rice and (suberb) garlic naan from Trader Joe's, plus some sauteed spinich. Not as easy as take out but good to keep in the fridge for when the craving strikes. |
