My family is thinking of going to Southwest Utah this summer, perhaps in August. Is it too hot to go then? We are considering Zion and Bryce.

We went last July (25-30) and it was beautiful - low to mid 80s during the day but no humidity so perfect for hiking. We did both Bryce and Zion and then went further north to Park City. It cools down nicely at night - 60's. We stayed in the National Park at Bryce - one of the cabins on the rim which afford you the most beautiful sunrises and sets.

I've been to Bryce and Zion a few times, usually in the summer. It was hot, but not unbearable. We were able to hike, wander the trails and I don't recall being uncomfortably hot. It cools off noticeably at night. I've stayed at the lodge in one of them, and private cabins in the other. Can't recall which was which without looking through my slides (it's been a while), but I remember loving the early morning stillness.
I didn't visit Cedar Breaks or Canyonlands when I was there, but friends who have been to both loved them. Cedar Breaks is close to Bryce, I think Canyonlands is further north.

I went to the Valley of Fire (not all that far from Las Vegas) in the same time period, and that was HOT. Much hotter than Bryce and Zion.

You should be fine, I'd think.

i use to take an annual backpacking trip (haven't done it for the last couple of years tho) to arches for a week or more during the middle of August. i can say from experience that it is really hot... 100 degrees hot. i've been out on the rocks a few times where the thermometer read 115. jam and cody are right tho... it does cool off really nice at night and there is no humidity.
