I had delicious cuban beef from Crane's last night- and it was a great value, I got two dinners and two small lunches out of one $11 dinner for two! I recommend calling ahead though- once before I went at dinnertime and there was none left. Anyway, thought I would pass on my good experience- happy eating, everyone.

Thanks Jennifer, can you elaborate on the meal a little?

Jennifer,
You must eat like a bird! My husband and I tried the "dinners for two" a few times, and while they were quite tasty, we found the portion sizes absurdly small. I considered mentioning it to them, but I felt that to say, in essence, "we won't be eating these anymore and this is why" to be sort of churlish.

I too am skeptical that $11 = 4 meals.

The cuban meal has a green salad with avocado and dressing, rice and black beans, and shredded cuban beef in a pleasantly spicy (not hot) sauce.

Tinkrock- I guess portion size is hard to quantify. Maybe they increased the portions or it varies per meal- in this case the salad quantity was quite generous with the dinner, so we had some beef and rice left over for each of us to take for a small lunch. We also split a bread pudding for dessert to fill us up. But I do eat small portions to make up for my dessert habit, a normal Chinese takeout dish will feed me two or three meals.

It is still a good deal for 2 meals, given the deliciousness. I don't mean to suggest it would be 4 meals for anyone but me.

My kids order from them frequently.. portion size does tend to vary a lot, but not enough to put them off. They're eating good "home made" food instead of frozen or fast food options. After a long day, they just want to pick something up and go home.

We had the same experience as Tinkrock. We ordered the meatloaf one night (didn't love it) and thought it might have been just that meal. Tried the Cuban beef a week later - really enjoyed it but you could hardly call it (even modestly) 2 adult servings.

I think the meals are really delicious and the portions are just right.

Thanks for the tip! Eleven bucks seems like a fairly good deal for a full meal for one. Consider what one of the "special" dishes is at the chinese place up the street, for instance.

I went to Cranes for the first time today. Just had a dried cherry scone and a cup of coffee, but it was EXCELLENT--and this coming from am a TOTAL coffee snob. I guess it took me a while to go in there because I miss Carmelitas so (those tamales were so good!). I wish these guys the best of luck and will try the dinner.

I can't remember if chicken night is Tuesday or Thursday but it's great. I hear that Salmon Fridays are great too. I'll hit all of the nights before long.

I have the menu hanging by my computer. Thursday is chicken night. We have ordered the Ropa Vieja (Wed. meal) and were very pleased with it. Not a huge portion size, but delicious. They also do an amazing butternut squash soup.

We've done the dinner specials twice, and we've had the same reaction - just about enough for 2 people, but no more, and that's if you're eating weight watchers recommended portions. Which is half of what you'd typically be served in a restaurant. Tabachnicks near Drug Fair used to (and may still) do dinners for two for $9.95. You get twice the amount of food, but the quality is certainly much lower.

With that said, the most recent time i was in Cranes, i noticed the dinner specials menu said "Serves 1-2." I'd always thought of these as dinners for two, so i'm not sure i'd originally assumed incorrectly, or if they recently added that note based on portion size feedback. I can't find the original menu i'd picked up when they started doing it. Either way, i still think it's a great service to maplewood residents, and i hope they succeed!

And they also know Cheese! As much I miss Carmelita's I missed the original Maplewood Cheese Shop even more. If I had to lose Carmelita's at least I get a good cheese shop in return.

Whenever I need a special treat, I go to Crane's. Not only are the grilled vegie sandwiches the best around but the scones (dried cherry and apricot) are outrageous. It's such a pleasure to go in and get served by the owners, two really nice guys. I love supporting Maplewoodians who choose to open restaurants in the town they live in, don't you?

I just started patronizing Crane's. Everything has been delicious. Looking forward to sampling more items.
