We are going in February for an overnight trip leaving Friday night returning Saturday night to Washington DC. I don't want to drive. Amtrak and various airlines look expensive. I guess because we are not staying on a Saturday night. Any ideas? |

If you can avoid Friday and Sunday, Amtrak is a pretty good deal...you can pay more or less depending on if you go Acela or one of the regional trains. AAA will give you a 5% discount; every bit helps. Also, kids travel for 50% on many trains, and these discounts may be combinable. |

If you're adventurous you can take the "chinatown bus". My six year old and I did it. It wasn't so bad. http://www.ivymedia.com/eastern/ |

Train is so easy. But reserve your seat. |

Yes -- definitely RESERVE on a Friday night. Once, when my son and I took the train down one Friday night there were no seats until after Trenton (we got on at Metro Park). |

My daughter and I once had to stand all the way to Philadelphia. We got on in Newark and the train was already standing room only. (Friday afternoon, as I recall.) But I think that all the Northeast Corridor trains may be reserved now. |

I love to drive but not in Washington. Someone recommended driving from NJ to one of the northern DC Metro stops and taking the Metro from there. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like a good compromise. There are Metro maps online. |
