Does anyone have a recommendation for a good on line grocery store for delivered groceries? I have heard of Peapod. Any other places that serve our area? I would love to find a place that has good variety, fresh produce, organic stuff, etc... |

Nope, Peapod seems to be the only one. |

Unless you're looking for something like a co-op. I know some folks who do Purple Dragon, but don't know a lot about it myself. |

I received my first Peapod order last night. They do have organic stuff, but only about as much as any mainstream supermarket (not whole Foods). I did get fresh produce, which I was curious about. It's hard to ask someone to pick your "melons" for you - some people like really firm, really ripe etc. They did fine. Nothing came bruised or overripe. FWIW, I loved the experience. I am a former Fresh Direct shopper and while Peapod isn't that, it's certainly a more-than-adequate substitute. I recognize I may need to supplement with a trip to the market every now and then, but that's ok. What Peapod will do is eliminate the impulse buys. I hate when I come home with a box o' Mallomars or some weird ice cream that caught my eye. |

I've been using Peapod every other week for about six weeks now. I really like them a lot, but there have been a few bumps along the way. The first time, my eggs were broken (eggs have been intact since then). Then last night, they were out of stock on quite a few things, including basics such as a gallon of 2% milk. They made some substitutions on things that didn't make sense to me -- like they substituted a package of prepacked cheese & crackers, which I never buy, for a box of crackers. Not at all the same thing. Then they didn't bother subbing for the gallon of milk at ALL - not even 1%, whole, or skim. The milk was what I really needed most of all, and it was the one thing that I didn't get. I do Peapod about every other week and go to the market in person the rest of the time. I do think the service is great and the prices seem reasonable, but the substitutions make me frustrated. And how can they be out of stock on MILK? |

Zoesky - you can opt to not allow substitutions, as I am sure you aware. I opted for no substitutions because I was concerned about what they choose for me.

Zoesky, you need to indicate your preference for substitutions. Most items have a standard substitution. The way you do this is to click on the name of the item in question, say the milk. You'll get a window with the nutritional information for the product, and in a yellow bar underneath the picture of the product, all the way to the right, it says "Substitutions." Click on that and it will tell you what the substition is. The box will already be checked to allow substitions. If you would prefer not to get the item they indicate, just uncheck the box. I'm a bit curious though, because I'm looking at the substitution for a gallon of Stop & Shop 2% milk, and it says it would be a half gallon instead. If I were you, I would call them on these types of things. I think they generally make good. And, FWIW, I've never had any real problem with the service--eggs are always intact, produce is fine, and fish is good too. Lately, it seems they've been out of stock on a lot of stuff, and that's somewhat of an inconvenience, but I guess there's not a lot that can be done about out of stock items. |

I guess the whole substitution thing flew right over my head. I remember agreeing to the idea of it, but since last night was the first time they've had to do any subbing, I wasn't sure how it worked. I am flabbergasted that they chose to just not BRING milk rather than sub for it. When I asked the guy, he said it was because they didn't have any to bring. I said, "Isn't this kind of the point of doing Peapod?" but he had no response. Interestingly, today I had an online email survey sent to me by Peapod, so I let 'em have it on the milk problem. But overall, I am very happy with the service. |

What is Peapods quality of Meat and Fish? Comparable to Fresh Directs, or Costco's? |

I haven't ordered meat or fish, but have ordered basic produce such as spinach, celery, carrots, clementines and apples -- all have been fine. |

Also, you have the right to refuse the substitution at the time of delivery. So, even if you've ok'd subbing overall in your order, if you get a particular sub you don't want/like, you just give it back to your delivery guy/gal and they will refund the money. |

Peapod rocks. The only real problem is the out-of-stock items, which always seems to be the thing you need most. We also didn't get our milk this week. I find that if you get a delivery early in the week, there are more out-of-stock items....so we try to order Wed-Sat. They are most always on-time too and pleasant to deal with. |
