Do you have any reccomendations for a nice, moderately priced, weekend-getaway spot [no kids] that's not more than say 2-3 hours drive? It's been a nutsy winter for the husband and I already and we need some r&r time-off together. There doesn't, in my opinion, need to be much going on around the location- I'm looking more for a nice, relaxing, restorative place for us to catch up with each other. Thanks!

Well, gosh, thanks Yarmouth. Would love to know what good advice you think I gave!

This place really is great. I would love to go myself, but my family has a vacation home on Lake Wallenpaupak, 10 minutes away, so it's kind of hard to justify! The best we can do is an enjoyable dinner in the restaurant.

And this time of year, it probably takes less than 2 hours to get there.

Although Route 80 West is always a bitch at rush hour, so I would plan accordingly. We hit baaad traffic last Friday at 5PM.

Ah, yes, Cape May. Another one of my favorites.

And again, this time of year you can definately make it there in about two hours (provided, of course, you go when it's not rush hour!).

Cape May B&B's are great. The Sagamore is great at Lake George. A primo getaway is the Mohonk Mountain House near New Paltz, but it is $$$$. I have heard great things about the B&B's in the finger lakes where you can visit wineries too

In cape may, we always go to the Virginia Hotel, which has one of NJ's top restaurants inside, The Ebbitt room. It's great in the winter, spring, summer, fall, and they run terrific specials in the off season....see the website:

Meand...looks awesome, we've been looking for a place just like that....how good is the restaurant there?

What is the setting of the property? (hills/mts/river/lake or just woods?)

Thanks!

Smarty, I assume you're referring to The Settler's Inn? It's actually in a cute, kind of quaint little town called Hawley, sort of at the edge of town on the main road on the way out of town. The town is in a valley. The property to the rear of the inn is quite extensive and has a garden and a terrace and a little gift shop. There's a smallish river that runs along the back of the property. The surrounding area is, overall, very woodsy. There's antiquing to be done, and I think there may even be a winery up there somewhere? Never been, so I can't be certain.

I really enjoy the restaurant a lot. It kind of puts me in mind of American Fare (which is now Terra, but I haven't been). Lovely, stylish meals made with fresh local organic ingredients.

I think if you peruse the website, it will answer most of your questions. I know the restaurant menu is there, and they also have a listing of events and things to do and see.

I'd sure love to know if you go and what you think? I've recommended this place several times on this board. Would love to stay there myself but, as I said, it hardly makes much sense since I've been going to the area for 30 some-odd years! I'd rather spend the money and visit a new place.

Me and the boys-

Wow, what a flash from the past. We used to go to Lake Wallenpaupak when I was a kid. Cousins had a house on Lake Ariel! Are you from that area?

Happyman, nope not "from" there, technically. My family has had a vacation home on the lake for the last 30 years (God I feel so old when I say that!) or so. We go most weekends in the summer, and occasional weekends in the spring and fall.

It's a great place to "get away" and it's not too far to drive.

Here's the view from our deck:

You bring back good memories....I am not from there either, but aunt/uncle/cousins had a house for about 50 + years ( you think you feel old!) They lived in Scranton.
Yarmouth .... lovely place.

Hi all -
Great suggestions! Settler's Inn looks perfect, and great idea about Cape May too - I always associate it with summer time, but of course now would be a good time to go for what we're after. That's one heck of a view, Meand!
Thanks for all the suggestions - I really can't wait to get away.

Would love to know if you go to Settler's Inn.

Now, if I can just find a way for hubby and I to get away for that R&R you mention.
