looking for a nice restaurant with nice ambiance (not a big loud place) and excellent food that might take 2 people for Saturday at the last minute.

Try PER SE (212) 823-9335; ASIATE (212) 805-8881; or MASA and BAR MASA (212) 823-9800.

My wife and I just found a new Wine Bar on 53rd between 8th and 9th...It was a great place to kick off our night for a drink before dinner. It's half way down the block, on the south side of the street.

Da Lat's recos all are great too....

Per Se last minute? I don't think so. Not to mention you can expect upwards of $500 for 2.

We recently ate at a new Italian restaurant that was tremendous in the Equitable Building and the former Palio Bar. It's called Piano Due or Due Piano("Second Floor") and it's owned by the same people who own Scalini Fedeli in Chatham. We had 12 people there for dinner and it was amazing.

none of these places actually. I asked for suggestions from NY-folk at work. Ended up at Roberto Passon (46th and 9th), which was very good but not my favorite. It was very convenient to the theater and that was helpful since it was raining. I am making note of these options for future use. Thanks
