Doesn't it seem like there is a demand? If it were good, my family and I would definitely go, probably once a month.

Village Cafe.... Very limited menu but well handled and worth the small price.

We haven't been for about a year as its a small venue and always very noisy air conditioning or something but the indian food is really good for a 'coffee shop' - Thanks John C I'd forgotten about their indian....time to try it again.

But they have no vindalu! no naan, no samosas, no raita, no mango laasi (sp?). Would love a Baluchi's (NYC Indian) or a Begun or a Raagini on M'wood Avenue, wouldn't you?

Melonious - I'm hearing through the rumor mill that an Indian restaurant may be coming to Maplewood soon.

Jenny: Wait for the rumour to come true rather than try Neelam, IMHO. Better to drive to Morristown and eat at any of several good Indian restaurants there. Or Route 22. Or Montclair. Or Edison.

Disclaimer: This opinion is my own, and is not meant to be a reflection of the opinion of any other posters on MOL, many of whom agree with it, but with which many of whom vociferously disagree. A quick search of the archives will turn up several long threads about Neelam, for and against, and also listing a host of other Indian restaurants all over the area that people like as well.

Does anybody know about an Indian restaurant on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell? I know about 22 and some in Montclair, was curious. Need to spice up my diet.

I know Neelam was closed for health reasons. If they are reopened, I'd check carefully...

Purplebug- That's Wizwan in West Caldwell. Friends say it is very good. Personally, I don't eat Indian.

ok folks -- are you ready for a juicy bit of news? The space that was formery Dasti's will be an Indian restaurant!! The owner is supposedy bringing the chef in from the Culinary Institute in New Delhi. It's about time. Once it opens, I really hope our towns will make a effort to keep them in business, if not it will just be more of the same in the village.

Wow, that is easily the best food news I've heard since moving here. As long as they have takeout, I'll be eating there every week. Can't wait!

Cool! I was about to say that we find Neelam to be incredibly hit or miss. We only go there in times of sheer desperation (must have it now, no time to venture far). Anyway, we got take-out from Neelam on Thursday and it was incredibly fabulous. I'm now worried that there were "special ingredients" at work.....

I think the new Indian restaurant will get lots of business from Millburn & Short Hills too - we've been dying for a good local place. (Or *any* local Indian place, for that matter.)

I'm not sure what to be happier about - that Dasti's closed or that we may be getting Indian in town!! Either way, I'm doing a happy gig right now!!

 My fear... $20 entrees.

I'll tell ya right now, the difference between me ordering once a week versus once every few months is $10 entrees versus $20 entrees. That and if they deliver. Delivery is one way to get me to order more frequently. (What's funny is that in NYC I would be posting $8 entrees versus $15 entrees and the food would probably be of a MUCH higher calibre...ahhhh the joys of Jersey living.)

But I agree with what everyone else wrote. Indian in the village is a HUGE improvement over nail salons and merely acceptable but extremely OVERPRICED Italian. Ahhhhhhh...the joys of eating Indian al fresco. I'm fantasizing about it already. Double aahhhhhhh....an inherently vegetarian friendly cuisine in town. Did I die and go to heaven?

One of the better options around here is Veena on 22 East in Scotch Plains (across from Bowcraft). Place has been open for years and never seems to have enough business to support it, but they have wonderful South Indian vegetarian food.

Now, does anyone know where to buy Indian groceries around here? We used to live in London and could find decent pappadum and chutneys in any market.

There is an Indian store on Bloomifield avenue in Caldwell. I believe it is right before the WORLD SAVINGS BANK intersection if you are coming from away from Montclair. There is also another one on 46 in Parisppany, near the Bennigans. Sorry, I don't remember the names. And both are the closest locations that know of.

EricR. Take the Parkway South to the BLUE Metro Park Exit. Which will take you to Wood Avenue going in the correct direction. Go up hill about 1 mile (est.) and take a right on Oak Tree Road. You will have so many Indian Restaurants and Groceries it will make you EYES SPIN...and I'm NOT kidding. If I had to guess, I would say there are at least 30 (probably more) restaurants on Oak Tree Road (which spans between Edison and Iselin) of varying expenses from dirt cheap to expensive and 5 or more groceries not to mention very many Indian stores. The surrounding areas of those two towns have many more Indian things to offer too. It's a little India for sure. I love it.

I'm not kidding, it's about 20 minutes from us in Maplewood.

Also there is a little India in Jersey City which is also excellent but a slightly smaller scale to Edison/Iselin. As for how to get there, I'll leave that to someone else to explain, but it's not too hard to get too via 280 and also maybe a 25 minute car ride? Although parking is MUCH MUCH worse in that area because it's much more urban.

An authentic Indian upscale restaurant is opening soon in Summit where Troast's bakery used to be.
