I plan to take a week's respite to work on my health, relaxation techniques, meditation, personal issues, etc. I'd like to keep it as reasonable as I can (hopefully under $100 per night) and at least one hour from my home (Morris County).

I'm looking for a safe area where I'll be comfortable by myself. It's not necessary to have things "to do" nearby since I probably won't be leaving the room except for meals. However, it wouldn't hurt for the scenery to be nice. A small town where I could walk to nearby restaurants would be lovely, but is not necessary. If need be, I can eat at the hotel.

I'd like Internet access and room service (for those days when I'm feeling decadent). I assume a place that caters to businesspeople would be best.

Any ideas?

Aren't there very modest - but beautiful - "ashrams" in the Adirondacks?

I think my husband went to one with an old girlfriend. The purpose of the place is to meditate, the food is brown rice and stuff and it's in a beautiful spot. If I remember correctly it is also very inexpensive.

It's not my cup-of-tea (no steak, no scotch, no ceasar salad) but I know it exists.

Thank you for the information, kmk. If I find something called an ashram I'll look into it, although brown rice doesn't excite me. :-)

I'm really looking for a place to be by myself, to be sort of a mini-retreat.

Cyathea,

He won't talk about it much... but he just said it was outside of Lenox, Mass. That's all he can remember.

I think the place near Lenox might be this. I know people who've gone and like it very much:

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health

Thank you, marian. I just checked out their website and it does look interesting, but I'm afraid that's not quite what I'm looking for.

What I'm trying to do is create my own retreat, during which I can work on what needs work, face issues I've been avoiding, practice relaxation and meditation techniques, etc. Although I enjoy being with other people, I'm an introvert at heart and am looking forward to this time alone. Hence, the hotel with room service and restaurants nearby. If I don't "accomplish" anything, that's fine too. It'll still be nice to just take out some time for myself.

I really appreciate your information and the trouble that you went to. Thank you both!

Cyathea,

Give Kripalu a call...I am almost certain that they have a "complete isolation" option to their R&R program.

This is the place my husband stayed.

It sounded good to me because at $115? a night you got room (in a dormitory - OK you sleep alongside someone) and board.

Having been to Kripalu, I don't think it's what Cyathea is looking for in this instance. Dormitory style bedrooms are quite different than hotel with room service.

I like a couple of places within an hour of you:

Chestnut Hill on the Delaware:

Woolverton Inn

Bridgeton House

Inn at Lambertville Station

(more of a small hotel than an inn -- across the bridge from New Hope, lots of lovely walks, good restaurants, AND near the outlets of Flemington. This is where I go to recharge.

Happy recharging!

Thank you so much. These are the types of places I was hoping to find. I visited each of the sites you suggested; Chestnut Hill on the Delaware seemed particularly welcoming and closest to my budget.

Thank you again. You folks are very kind to help.

I once read an article ("Real Simple" or something) about a woman who does this once a year or so, but she does so at home (guess she lives alone!) - unplugs the phone, TV etc., cooks ahead, sleeps in the guest room or something - sounded nice

OK. Just thought that through and it wouldn't be under $100. But a GREAT get-away and a world of it's own.
