Any recommendations for a quick, decent, casual meal in or immediately around Penn Station for before a concert? (other than fast food)

Well I wouldn't call it a NICE or even necessarily a sit down restaurant but if you want super close then across the street on the 7th Avenue side (it's on 7th at between 32 and 31st I think) is Cafe Europa. It's usally a quick lunch place for me, but I have done it as dinner a few times on the way home. The food isn't bad, the atmosphere is sorta clean, modern and bright and there isn't table service but the food is actually not bad and they have a very large selection of foods for everyone. Pasta aint even bad. I've done the blackened shrimp wraps.

If you want a proper sit down meal, you couldn't do ANY BETTER than walking the one avenue East on 32nd to Korea Town. Kam Gung San is extremely popular at 9 W. 32nd St. and is delicious. But there are a SLEW of other ones to choose from including a Korean Bakery to grab coffee and dessert on the same side of the street a few doors down. It's a lot of fun. If you haven't had Korean before, it is alot of fun because they give you tons of free appetizers (almost all pickled) and you if your a meat eater (I'm not) you couldn't go wrong with Bulgolgi a sesame flavored thinly fried steak slices that you wrap up yourself in lettuce leaves. TS LOVES this dish and gets it everytime. If you like ribs you can't go wrong with Kalbi. If you don't know Korean, I'm sure a ton of other people could reccomend other dishes too. Seriously to be at Penn Station and NOT do Korean would be sin. It would like being in Chinatown and not having Chinese.

Tupelo Grill is located in One Penn Plaza (8th Ave side). You could sit in the bar area and have a nice casual meal.

Nick and Stef's is a decent steak place and not too fancy.

They're on 31st between 7th and 8th (9 Penn Plaza)

I always like to try the Korean BBQ places in the area. There is a very good one on 36th St between 5th and 6th, but the name escapes me.

I enjoy Tupelo's and Nick & Stef's very much, but know that you will be paying $25-35 per entree.

If looking for something ethnic and not as pricey, there is a nice Thai place on 8th between 31st and 30th, on the same side of the street as the Post Office.

Seven which is just past Mustang Harry's (and the same owner) is pretty good too. Also Mustang Sally's which is another block south.

Seven is not bad. More choice than pub grub.

Stout rocks pre concert. Food's not bad.

Then there is an old stand bye. Keen's Chop House.

Nothing better than spicy Korean food on a winter day. The place Alleygater mentioned is good (that's the one with the piano hanging on a cliff between the two floors, I think?). About 12 appetizers come with each meal.

We usually meet Manhattan friends at Seven if we want an easy commute - its just the other side of Starbucks on 7th ave - food is good.

I might start trying some of these others for a bit of variety though! Great thread. Thanks

Beema Grill has been closed for awhile. It has been replaced by Local West, which is a nice (though someimes loud and crowded) place to get a drink...haven't tried their bar food yet.

Tracks is very nice, very friendly bartenders. Run by Bruce of Bruce's Burgers.
