I'm considering a vacation to Malta next week. Has anyone been there? Any advice about where to stay, what to do? I don't really want to spend too much, but the best I've found is about $2300 for my husband and I. Does that figure seem right? Thanks!

My mum was born in Malta - a few weeks before WWII started and her dad was in the British Army which had a strategic naval base there. I haven't been there myself (parents and siblings did) but I do know that if you want a beach holiday you might want to go to another destination.

On the other hand it seems to be a good place if you like history and there is an adjacent island called Gozo which is a popular destination.

You can find out more info about Malta on the Lonely Planet website:

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/europe/malta

- you can also see the message forums for Malta by clicking on the 'Thorn Tree' and in the search box, type Malta and there is quite a lot of info there.

What does the $2300 include?

Hope this helps! On the other hand you might also like to consider some other Mediterranean islands eg. Ibiza, Majorca aka Mallorca or the Greek islands of Corfu or beautiful Paxos or perhaps Mykonos.

frankly, I'd recommend Corsica, for its real Mediterranean flavor and gusto. You can hike in the hills of the interior, relax in the port towns, in small cafes and simple bistros with delicious food.

I could recommend almost any restaurant in Ajaccio and you wouldn't be disappointed. Sometimes it's a bit pricey to get there from here, but prices for lodging and food on this French island are way less than in the metropole.

Thanks for your help, guys!
Miss L Toe, we’re looking at 2300 for air and hotel. It was cheaper to go to Rome and Venice. I’m looking at gotoday.com. Any suggestions if you think there might be better deals?
I’m not really looking to go to the beach. But the island looks so pretty and the history is interesting. Innis, have you been and not liked Malta? We are planning to go to Greece at some point in the next year. I thought this might be interesting as a more off-the-beaten-path type trip. For the most part, I’ve been to some of the hit-list cities. I wanted to see something a little different. But if you think that the food stinks and it’s boring then maybe I’ll look at Corsica.
