I am planning a trip to LA with my 5 year old. I am basically looking for some fun stuff to do with him. Any suggestions?

The beaches are fun -- Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach etc. Annaheim is not far (Disneyworld). My kids enjoyed Hollywood (but the adults were not so keen on it) and the Getty musuem. Where are you staying? LA is very big and getting around on the freeway is often not fun.

My folks used to live in LA (Santa Monica) - there's lots to do with kids.
There's a little amusement park on the boardwalk in Santa Monica - can also rent bikes etc. & the 3rd Street Promenade is nearby - cute indoor playspace on 3rd St - lots of restaurants & a few playgrounds around too. The Tar Pits might be cool; the newer Disney park is supposed to be cool - have not been. I recall likeing Knottsberry Farm when I was a kid...but the coolest is a drive away near San Diego - Lego Land is awesome (great zoo & Sea World nearby)
Oh - the cruise to Catalina Island is nice.
Great little kid-friendly restaurant in Paradise Cove in Malibu...

Have fun!

Traffic in L.A. these days is absurd . One trick friends of mine have been doing is renting Toyota Pirius . You are aloud to use the HOV lanes even if your alone.

I think we are staying at Le Meridien. My husband is going to be working and this is usually where he stays.

I heard that Lego Land is great. I did map quest and they said that it is about 1 1/2 hrs away. Does that sound about right? Also, is a day at Disney enough?

Thanks everyone for the tips.

jet...

I've been to LA a few times and have NEVER had traffic worse there than NJ or NY!
I sometimes fly into John Wayne, and also LAX.
I love Laguna & Newport beaches...and the OC.
I think it's neat to tour the Universal lot with kids, and then there's Disneyland...

The La Brea tar pits are unique and if your child is into dinosaurs, it might be awesome to see the bubbling tar pits into which the dinosaurs disappeared.

A child also might be amused by a nighttime drive along Mulholland Drive, with its vast sea of lights.

Cheap thrills are things like going up and down the glass elevators in the Hotel Bonaventura, and then having a "cocktail" in its revolving restaurant at sunset. (At sunset, the sky in LA turns lurid colors because of the smog.)

The Farmer's Market can be fun, and so is seeing the Pacific Ocean. At Venice Beach, you can watch the rollerskaters and street performers.

A day at Disneyland is more than enough for a 5-year-old. Maybe too much! I think your child will be amused by simple things close to your hotel. In fact, the hotel may be excitement enough!

Hi, BK2NJ,

We've just returned from LA with our 5-year old triplet boys and 7 y.o. daughter. Spent a day at Disneyland (not a bad drive at all, even with heavy traffic) and it was more than enough -- we didn't catch everything by a long shot, but the kids were thrilled.

We spent around 7 hours and went both into Disney's California Adventure (be sure to catch the brand-new Monsters Inc ride -- kids loved it; they also loved Muppets 3-D theatre and Disney's Playhouse) and Disneyland proper (kids loved Bugz land very much). Much ice cream followed!

We finished up with the Disney parade on Main Street and the kids were thrilled!

I'd also second an evening in Santa Monica -- we did that too :-) the boardwalk and the 3rd street promenade -- tons of street performers, including a guy with a monkey you can pet -- what more can a 5-year old want?

Enjoy!

1.5 hrs seems a bit under for the trip to Lego land, but not by much...enjoy!
