Is there a good place in town for buffalo wings and beer? The hotter the wings, the better.

In the past people have recommended O'Reilly's in Maplewood, on Millburn Ave, across from the Mazda/VW/Audi Dealer.

Okay, so I tried Cluck U because it's close to my house and I ended up needing takeout instead of eat-in. The "Thermonuclear" wings were impressively hot (tears, runny nose, etc.), though I didn't like the sauce as much BW3's (which, despite being a chain, has some pretty tasty wings). The Cluck U sauce reminded me of Cincinnati-style chili--a touch of cinnamon, maybe. I tried to order Cluck U's hottest wings ("911") but was told that the owner had decided not to sell them (I got the impression the place is under new ownership). Too bad. I was really looking forward to signing a waiver . . .

Thanks for all the recommendations. Looking forward to trying some of the other places.

Definitely try O'Reilly's, they also have levels of hottness....seems right up your alley. I personally like the wings at the Gate too.

Does Cluck U deliver? Anyone familiar with a place that serves wings like mini-fried chicken pieces? I find the sauce adheres much better to those wings, and I'm fairly certain the Trattoria serves them that way.

Are any of these wings non batter dipped in any way shape or form? I like wings the true Buffalo style, which is just the wing deep fried and the hot sauce. Nothing else. Do tell please.

Correction The Soulful Mr T ... There is no question that in its day Hudson's (tragically gone now and replaced by the overpriced Sushi Lounge) definitely had the best wings in Hoboken. Loved Maxwells too though. When did you live there? Always nice to "meet" another Hobokenite.

Someone who claimed to have worked at Cluck U posted the Cluck U recipe on MOL a few years ago:

one part Chinese duck sauce
one part cayenne pepper (vary % to set heat level)
one part __ brand BBQ sauce (I forget which brand)

Dave, that would be "Open Pit" brand BBQ sauce.

3 parts Open Pit BBQ Sauce
1 part Chinese Duck Sauce
Cayenne Pepper to taste

Hudsons was my introduction to Buffalo Wings, when I had just jumped of the boat so to speak.
Never found anything like it since.

I do like the once at the Gate and at O'Reilly's.

SJ,
We lived in Hoboken at the time, we had made an offer on a home (our current) here in Maplewood.
We were buying, not selling.

I miss Rogos too. I think Tues was 10c wing night and wed was $5 beer and a burger night. My only wish was that they had Sam Adams on tap. Life was so much simpler then...if only i knew how easy i had it! I

Unfortunately, to get authentic, truly delicious Buffalo wings, one must be in Buffalo or Rochester, New York. Anything else is just imitation.

However, if there are decent imitations locally, I would be interested.

Incidentally, a real Buffalo wing sauce would not use commercial BBQ sauce. Ingredients would include cayenne pepper, hot sauce (e.g., Frank's hot sauce), perhaps orange juice.....

hahah... rogos... i usta be a regular there. the fact that the bartender even wore a pistol tucked down the front of his pants didn't even deter me.

as far as wings go... a friend brought over some from the hooters on 22 when we were having a party one night. they were not bad.

Jane and Micheal Stern put out a book a long time ago of food trends around the country...they had the original buffalo wing recipe from the Anchor Bar and Grill in Buffalo (I think that was the name of the bar) and the story of how the wings were developed....the recipe called for tabasco, butter and wings that had been deep fried. They served them with a side of celery and carrot stix and bleu cheese dressing.

I too found the Rogo years much simpler. He had a gun?

I went to a place where the bar tender had a cattle prod. Said he used it once and the guy flew across the room. Could have been a lie.
