My husband and I are leaving the 2 and a half year old and the one and a half year old home with a platoon of helpers and are going away together. We need someplace in driving distance for 2 nights (so we can get back if we need to). I was thinking about the Mayflower Inn in Connecticut which looks beautiful. Anyone tried it? Want to recommend something else? We really want a fireplace/ canopy bed kind of place. |

Any other —ahem— activities needed? My husband and I spent our tenth anniversary weekend last year at a Spa/Resort near Woodstock NY. The Copperhood Inn. www.copperhood.com The place was gorgeous, very private. We had a luxurious duplex suite. Accommodations included three healthy gourmet meals and use of the spa facilities. We went on two hour hikes, meditated, took yoga, and had a couple of spa treatments each too, plus sauna, etc. The place does not get crowded, so we were really able to relax and reconnect. Cost was about $285 pp/per night. I loved it so much I might go back with my mom and sister for my mom's b-day. Wine/alcohol and coffee are available & each room has an entertainment center (and they have lots of DVD's to borrow each night). Our suite also had a jacuzzi for 2. |

Check out Dutchess County in NY State. Right across the Hudson River from Woodstock. The Hudson River Valley has a lot of wonderful B and B's . Plenty with any kind of amenities you might want. Come to think of it, Hudson River Valley has a really good website. There is a winery there (actually there are several). The best is easy to figure out. The Culinary Institute of America is in Hyde Park. Wonderful restaurants there and around, since it is such a popular place for City dwellers who want culture in their country side. Bard College is there and so is Vassar. They have art galleries, etc. It really is a wonderful area. |

Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY. Can't be topped for accomodations, convenience (hour and a half) and definitely has the fireplace option down. Very old school (no tvs in room); but with modern updates, like their new spa/pool and===gasp---a bar. Expensive, but meals are included. Truly remarkable place. |

Having been to both (albeit Mohonk with kids) I found Copperhood much more romantic and private, and the rooms were more comfortable. Not to downplay the beauty of Mohonk, it is spectacular & I would go back with the kids. It just seemed like more of a social scene. |

Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA, not more than 2 hours drive from here The Conservancy converted an old barn into an art museum displaying the works of N C Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and others. Longwood Gardens is a great place to walk around and smell the flowers. Lots of good restaurants (like the Chadds Ford Inn) Taquet in Wayne, and plenty of B&Bs to choose from. |

Try the Whitehall Inn (if it's still there) in New Hope (possibly Lahaska) PA. The breakfasts are over the top. Great restaurants in the general vicinity as well (i.e. Doylestown) |

Just got back from Congress Hall, a "newly" renovated historic (built in the late 1800's) hotel in Cape May. Really, really nice place. No fireplaces in the rooms, but a fabulous fireplace in "The Brown Room" which is a sumptuous lounge right off the lobby of the hotel. We had an ocean view room with a gigantic bath with a big old fashioned tub and a shower. Some good deals to be had. We got 2 $50 dinner vouchers for dinner at The Blue Pig Tavern--also in the hotel--and 3 $20 breakfast vouchers which we were able to apply to room service every morning. No canopies, but our king size bed had a big thick mattress, with feather bed top, crisp white sheets, a huge down comforter and 5 feather pillows. Boy was it hard to get out of that bed every morning. Staff was very pleasant and accomodating. Not the usual spectacular victorian decor one would expect from Cape May. More simple, understated, casual sophistication. A lot of stuff is closed in Cape May right now, but I thought that was a good thing as it "forced" us to "do nothing" and relax. The stores that were open were all having 50% off sales. Got sweatshirts for the kids for $5 each. Check out the website. Not the most technically advanced but there are pictures of The Brown Room, The Blue Pig Tavern and the rooms. I highly recommend it. We're hoping to go same time next year we loved it so much. http://www.congresshallhotel.com/ |

Two favorites: Newport, R.I. and Charleston, S.C. Great restaurants and sites in both, and every type of lodging including B & B's. |

True, but neither--particularly Charleston--is within what I would call "driving distance." My idea of "driving distance" is 2 or 3 hours. Could be yours and pangurbrowns are different? |
