Anyone know anything about traveling to Baja with kids and avoiding the "resorts" and "all-inclusives?" |

Where in Baja? I'm from Baja. There's Baja North (from Tijuana and Rosarito and Ensenada all the way down to Guerrero Negro), and Baja South (through Mulege, and the Cabos). What are you looking for? Mulege is a really quiet town but with great beaches, quaint restaurants, and decent places to stay that are not "touristy." Of course, the last time I went was 11 years ago when my husband and I, barely newleyweds and pre-kids stayed under a palapa (thatched hut) for $3 a night. Heaven.

Wow! You're a long way from home IShep! We are just thinking right now, but definitely focused on beaches. We are "water people" and I love to fish. I've read great things about some of the more "rustic" spots and they would have been perfect if it were just my wife and I, but the kids will require a little more "structure." |

AHCJR--figure out whether you want to be north or south, though from what I understand fishing is great throughout Baja, period. We used to go deep sea fishing (we'd charter a boat with others--and it's not terribly expensive) in Ensenada over the Christmas holiday. You'd see whales heading south to Scammons Lagoon. Great memories. My uncle (from Ensenada) loves the fishing in the Cabos, though. And, my brother who lives in San Diego goes to Cabo a LOT but he loves to golf. For my taste, the Cabos have gotten way too "resort-y" although it is still worthwhile to check what your options are. Have you checked out VRBO.com? You can rent a condo/house which is what we do now every summer in various Mexican cities/towns. With kids that makes a lot of sense--with a kitchen and a pool it makes life easier for us as parents and fun for the kids too. Last year we rented a house with my brother just north of Ensenada in a development called Punta Piedra. The beaches are not great for swimming though--they can be a bit rough, but good for surfers and fishing. We also saw at least 10-20 dolphins jumping and swimming directly in front of the house. My Dad was big into beach camping so we did a lot of that along the Baja coastline (gorgeous with the ocean on one side and the desert on the other). I also remember Cabo as a fishing village back then...really rustic. Obviously it has changed a lot and I simply can't get over the prices. Of course, compared to anything here, it is still affordable. Good luck and let me know if I can help in any other way. |

Pre-motherhood, the best vaction I ever went on was with Baja outdoor activities, http://www.kayactivities.com/, based in La Paz. Our kayaking trip had no kids on it, but if yours can be trusted to sit still in a kayak, they should be fine on a short (3 days or so) camping trip. It's very basic outdoor camping on the beach, which you'll have to yourselves. If your kids can swim, I highly recommend taking them to swim with wild sea lions, which was the highlight of our trip.
