Can anyone recommend a nice kid friendly beach for the summer? Any places to avoid? Thanks!

Long Beach Island is terrific and there are several kid-friendly hotels all over the island. For a great family vacation, I think Beach Haven is a good choice. There are also many houses for rent that vary in price. Check out http://www.longbeachisland.com/. |

Are you talking day trips from M/SO or are you looking for a place to go stay for a week or so? LBI is a bit far to go for a day trip, IMHO. Sandy Hook is close, lots of beach, no annoying boardwalk nonsense (although I love the boardwalk since it's so "Jersey Shore"). Great for a day trip. Point Pleasant is kind of fun for a day trip if your kids are old enough to enjoy the amusement park on the boardwalk there. There's also a little aquarium on the boardwalk there. |

LBI doesn't have a boardwalk, but has two full blocks of rides, arcades, mini golf, water slides and a mini water park. There are also a dozen more mini golf courses and play grounds. Also, a bike ride to the light house is a great time for kids. All of my younger cousins love it. LBI is no more than 2 hours from here unless you hit the usual wknd shore traffic, so learn to avoid it! |

There were similiar threads to this last summer...I am sure they must be in archives...to reiterate our experience, Avon just south of Bradley (exit 100 on GSP) is framed in the southern end of the beach with a curving jetty that makes for a little lagoon area where the waves are minimal...my children would play in that lagoon for hours with goggles and little butterfly nets finding all kinds of little things that children like. There is a boardwalk (to walk on) and a snack bar and lunch facilities and clean public rest rooms along that walk. It is IMHO a real family beach and although my girls are in their twenties we still go there for a day trip. |

If you are staying for a week, I strongly recommend LBI. Barnegat Light, in particular. |

My personal favorite is Cape May, hands down. Renting a house there for a week in August and I can't wait. |

LBI is fantastic. We're going there for our second summer in a row, to Loveladies, which is up on the northern end of the island near Barnegat. It's a longer drive to the restaurants, food store, amusements, etc but more relaxed up there. I strongly recommend LBI for kids -- the beaches are very clean, beautiful, with fine white sand, and dunes, and best of all, not honky-tonk. However, you'd better act fast. Good rentals go quickly. We booked our place back in January. |

if you go to LBI for a week and have young kids, you should know about Storybookland. It is an amusement park right off the parkway around AC and is GREAT! It was probably built in the 50s and so has a kitschy sort of appeal, and it is well maintained. It is also pretty cheap - last year I think it was $17 for all day, all you can ride admission. I spent that much in about 10 minutes at fastasy island in Beach Haven. |

not again, how far is Storybookland from Beach Haven? My kids loved Fantasy Island (it's perfect for the 3-8 set), but it is really expensive. |

I'm not sure - maybe 45 minutes? We usually stay in Barnegat Light and it is a good hour. It's at exit 37 off the GSP. Here's a link to their website: http://www.storybookland.com/ |

We love Storybook land, and you are right, its about 45 minutes from LBI. Also great if you are staying in southern shore area is the zoo down in Cape May Courthouse. It's another longer drive (an hour or so) but if your kids get bored of the beach after a while its an option. We are an LBI family, but one of the best things about the Jersey shore is finding your own favorite spot. There are so many different places, each with a different character. LBI is way more developed than when I grew up going there, but its my home away from home. |
