We think the best chinese around is Joy Luck Pavillion in West Orange, across from the ice rink and zoo. The fact that the specials are listed in Chinese was a tip-off that this place caters to the local Chinese crowd. The service is lovely and they have fish and eels in the tank for you to choose from if that's your thing. It's a bit too far for us to go for take-out. I swear I'm not fussy, but I don't particularly care for Bill & Harrys, Ginger Taste or Ling Ling. I would say Ginger Taste is my preferred of the three. There are two take out places on Springfield Ave. Anyone ever try them? |

China Chalet is excellent. Definitely a tad more upscale than your average Chinese restaurant so a tad pricier but definitely worth it. Only been to Joy Luck for dim sum and it's good. Definitely beats going into the city for dim sum. I think the regular dishes are supposed to be very good too. Ginger Taste is more Southeast Asian / Malaysian than Chinese though. |

Went to Ginger Taste. It was pretty good although the food was neither caliente nor picante. Wok Grilled Shrimp were nice, nice sauce and everything was served with very fresh vegetables. Thank you all for the suggestions. |

China Chalet is excellent!!!! They are so accomodating as well. They have large round tables that can hold up to 12 people with a lazy susan in the middle for serving ease...in addition to smaller tables and booths. They also are a BYOW which is nice and helps the finances...Food is really good...and they have cater to the Chinese clientele which is always a good sign for us. |

I walked out of Joy Luck Pavilion the one time I was there-- it was very smokey, and the fish in the tanks were sick with fin and tail rot, and very lethargic, ready to die. I again recommend Ling Ling on Main St in Millburn. |

All the Chinese food places out here have one thing in common, they make me miss living in the city.

Cathay 22 on Route 22 in Springfield. Much better than the ubiquitous brown meat in sauce that all tastes the same no matter what its called |

For sit-down Chinese food, Chen's (two locations--New Providence, in a shopping center off Springfield Ave, and one in the Echo Plaza Shopping Center in Mountainside)has above-average Chinese food. (They also have sushi.) For take-out, I think Peking House (on South Valley Road in West Orange, in the CVS shopping center)is better than most take-outs in the area. |

The takeout counter at the Kum Man supermarket on Route 10 (next to Penang) is very good. There's not many seatings so you buy to eat at home. It's cheap and certainly better than a lot of the Americanized faux Chinese places outside of NY city. The long line of Chinese customers says a lot about the authenticity of the place. |

Chen's in New Providence used to be my local Chinese restaurant. It was very good, but I wouldn't make the drive from here. My two favorites so far for local eat-in are Hunan Spring and Cathay 22.

Just a note, since I mentioned Chen's before, there's one in the Echo Plaza shopping center which is closer than the New Providence location (which is a larger restaurant than the one in Mountainside)--just go down Mountain Avenue (from Morris Ave. in Springfield) and you don't even have to go on Route 22. |
