I long for a double-hamburger-cheese surprise and an order of onion rings... or a healthier alternative, a salmon burger. And a brownie, chocolate chip cookie, or cake... |

Oh, how I miss Don's! Loved the double cheeseburger surprise, along with a lime rickey or those black and white milkshake thingys. Also, that pickle bar was the best! My in-laws still have a take out menu and I often look at it when I'm feeling nostalgic! |

Four generations of my family have eaten there. When Don first opened in the 50's, my grandmother whose husband was a colleague of Don's father would go there to give him business because she felt sorry for him. "It's a nice place, but it will never last." She was right-- only 44 years. Of course, it was sold once, and Don forclosed on them before selling again... to Max's... they sold out... and then... closed. What a shame. My fifth birthday party was held there. |

I fondly remember waiting in line to get seated. Great food, great atmosphere and of course, the best hot fudge. |

Livingston Bagel Shop carries Don's burgers and Hot Dogs uncooked. I think Nana's Deli also may carry them. |

My brother and I were just talking about missing Don's. The best burgers anywhere, and an excellent bakery. Remember all those photos on the wall of people in various phases of eating? That was much later in the Don's chronology. It was definitely the place to go, and the place to see and be seen. |

Don's was originally a drive-in..As soon as you got your driver's license that was the place to go to see and be seen....Best cheeseburgers ever...Saw Don a few years ago at the airport in Nassau..I think he lives in Florida now...What great memories.... |

Friend of LibraryLady here-Don's has a special place in my heart - It was 1959, and my boyfriend who I had know for seven days took me to Don's drive-in, we had hamburgers, french fries, soda, and he proposed to me there. Of course, I said yes, (I am a firm believer people know who their soulmates are and time is not what determines it!) We married a year later. Yes, today we are more in love than ever, love being with our children and grandchildren. The only thing different is we try not to eat hambergers and french fries anymore.(Except when we cheat on our so-called diets). We miss the movie drive-ins, the food drive-ins, and yesterday here at work we said how we miss Grunings, especially on the hill. What a great place for a cheap date, beautiful view and great ice-cream sundaes. By the way, I didn't get the ring till months later when he saved up for it. So the engagement was months later, but our oneness started at Don's.

I'm pretty sure Don's got its hamburgers and hot dogs (and possibly other food) from Best Provisions in Newark. I've bought from Best, and it sure seems just like it. Speaking of "the place to be seen," after Don's became Max's, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward stopped in one evening at the counter. |

Mumm- Don's- the best cheesedog and fries- or chili dog... and my mom's favorite classic Hawaiian Chicken Salad with teeny tiny datenut bread+cream cheese sandwiches on the side. The black and white cookies in the bakery along with Metropolitan cupcakes are no where to be found that are as wonderful. |

I hate beets. But 18 years ago when pregnant with my first son craved Don's beet salad at their pickle bar. We ate at Dons the night I went into unexpected labor after eating endless amounts of beets. Great memories, but haven't touched a beet since. |

Great story, Friend of LibraryLady, thanks for sharing. I only moved to this area in the early '80s, so my memories of Don's are post-drive-in, but I miss their burgers--they were just the best, and the place was so busy, everything was guaranteed to be fresh. I often sat at the front counter, striking up conversations with both customers and staff. It's sad when a really good, popular place like Don's goes out of business--there's no place even somewhat like it in the area. But time marches on, I guess... The Gruning's on the hill going out of business was another loss--I always liked going there and enjoying the view. And their ice cream was great. I guess the price they got for the land was just too good to pass up, and now the view belongs to the privileged few who can afford the condos in the building that now stands there. |

Ah, Peter's Bakery. Their crumb cakes. Their seven layer torte. I'm drooling! |
