Since we're new to the area we are trying lots of restaurants. We have heard there are good ones up in Montclair. Can anyone recommend a nice place that is relatively quiet and not too hard to get into on a Friday evening? We like lots of different types of food and gravitate toward bistro style places. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Nice place is easy. Relatively quiet is the problem. Good pan-Asian is Aozora (but very noisy). Epernee is a very good French Brasserie that is moderately priced (don't recall the noise) that didn't require a lot of lead time. Also, along the lines of quieter is Orbis Bistro which is on Watchung Avenue just off of Watchung plaza. It was very very good (try the duck)

very good, but may be more of special occasion choice - Fascino. You can check out menu, etc.

Blu and Cellar 8 are two of the hot, new and well-rated restaurants...both on Bloomfield, almost across the street from one another.

Eparney is very good bistro fare. Ate there just a couple of months ago when we couldnt get into Table 8.

Mesob is great. We were there a few Friday or Saturday nights ago and it was easy to get in early-ish (before 7) and was relatively quiet.

A second for Aozora--amazing food. True, they cram too many tables into the space, but the food makes up for it.

Raymond's has a great brunch. Also recommend it for dinner.

This is a link to a board called eGullet. Great NJ coverage. The particular link above is to a search of the word Montclair. Dave, I hope it is ok to post this.

For a different type of meal, consider Veggie Heaven! Excellent Chinese food with wonderfully fresh food and delicious sauces! Everything we ordered (2 couples) was great from the uniquely scrumptious sesame noodles to the dumplings to the "meat" entrees. They use no animal products whatsoever. One of the people in our party is a vegetarian and a good friend, but three were not. We were very surprised to all really enjoy our entrees because we were rather expecting not to.

It's a hike from S.Orange, but I look forward to going again and think about those sesame noodles often. They are unlike any I've ever had before and were delicious and fresh! I think it is a chain or franchise b/c my friend knows of another one in a different town, but says the Montclair restaurant is better.
