My husband and I, along with our 1 year old son, are planning a trip to San Diego soon. We're flying to San Diego and staying a few days. The plan is to drive to Scotsdale, AZ. The drive is supposedly a 6 hour drive so we are looking for a place on the way to stay for a night. The desert should be blooming at this time so we are looking forward to this drive. Anyone travel this way before with advice to offer? |

ummm... There's been a pretty horrific drought for ages now in AZ - I doubt that the desert is going to do much blooming this year. Yuma is about halfway between San Diego and Phoenix along I-8. I'm sure you'll find something better than truckstops there, but Yuma isn't my idea of a vacation destination. I've driven LA - Phoenix many times and my goal has always been to make time, as there's not much along the way. |

It has been almost 20 years since I have done that drive, and I don't recall anything exciting between San Diego and Phoenix. I was more like Mergele, aim to get there as quickly as possible. |

I agree with pp. Don't bother staying over unless a town along the way really interests you. You COULD stay in Yuma, it's fine, but not worth it. Even with a one year old, I'd make the 6-7 hour drive in one day, or during the later afternoon and into evening, when the baby could sleep. We just did a road trip with our 2 1/2 year old this summer across country (granted a 2 1/2 yo can sit with a portable DVD player for a while), and he was good for about a 4 hour stretch with a gas break, snack break, and stretch in between. Also, why Scottsdale, out of curiousity? Are you visiting friends or relatives? Otherwise I'd drive to Tucson or Sedona. A lot more unique and more interesting things to do... jen |

Former Cowgirl, We're still figuring out what we want to do but we have friends around the Scotsdale area so that's why it's our final destination. We're planning a day trip to Sedona once we meet up with friends. I think we will prob. make the trip in one day. I realize it's not worth the stay overnight and 6 hours isn't that bad as long as we can stop and let our son run around somewhere for a little while. Another thing..... I've got directions for both rt. I-10 or I-8....which is best? Thanks for the advice. |

I think it's both. I think you start on I-8 from San Diego and then get on 10. But don't hold me to that. AAA would be a better bet. Have you ever gotten trip tix from them? Well worth the membership. Scottsdale is lovely. I'm sure you know it's like the Boca Raton of Arizona. My husband and I always used to joke that it even "smelled" nicer in Scottsdale. If you're going soon, it'll be a lovely time for your little one to romp and play.
