I'm going to SF in April for business meetings - on my own dime. (This among the myriad disadvantages of being a free-lance consultant.)

I was hoping to find a nice but not expensive place to stay. Not downtown. I have friends in the Mission so near there would be great.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn near the San Francisco Airport. Close enough to drive downtown, or take the BART. Free Breakfast (pretty good), I think it was about $100

I have stayed at the Chancellor Hotel on Powell Street near Union Square. Nice, clean, conveniently located but small (that almost goes w/o saying). Not the closest thing to the Mission District but there's always a cab or bus.

We visited SF during a heavy convention time and couldn't find a hotel room. We ended up renting an apartment from a website called vrbo.com. It was great. it was 125/night for a full floor flat with a garden and full kitchen. The landlady left sprigs of fresh rosemary for us from her garden that smelled wonderful. She described herself as a Ms. Madrigal. I was a little nervous about it but it worked out great and I would definitely do it again in SF or another city. It was great to actual live in the city for a few days rather than being in an isolated hotel.
This is the one we rented, but there are several others available.

We've stayed at Beresford Arms (sister hotel of Hotel Beresford). Highly recommend it - we had a very large suite - an apartment, really. The staff could not have been nicer. As I recall there was a free wine and cheese reception in the evening as well.

Soulful Mr.

check out Kimpton hotels - funky and cheap.

Free wine + pizza happy hours every night - vouchers for free meals and you can talk them down to around $70 a night during the week.

Kimpton hotels are a great deal - they're "boutique" without the boutique pricetag.

Fluffy bathrobes, Aveda shampoos, and a staff that goes above and beyond to make your stay pleasant and affordable.
