My cousins are coming to New York (from Maine and Atlanta) for a wedding in July, and we're thinking of renting a house together and making a family vacation out of it. There are a lot of us -- one grandma/aunt, three or four couples, and 5 kids age 1 to 9, so it would need to be a pretty big house, with more than one bathroom for sure. We're open about location, though it should probably withing 2-3 hourse of NYC, and we'd prefer a beach or lake setting. Might any of you happen to know of any rental houses that might fit the bill? Fingers crossed!!!! |

I know of several near my place in Shaftsbury, VT that might fit your bill. Shaftsbury is about 3h20 min from hereord. There are also a number of rental houses on the NY state side of the border near towns like Hoosick, Hoosick Falls, and Petersburg. But things are getting booked fairly quickly for the summer. You could also try Point Pleasant, Spring Lake, and other towns on the Jersey shore, especially since you have people coming from Maine. Why make them go back to New England once they're here? |

Try www.vrbo.com. (It stands for vacation rentals by owner.) The have everything you could imagine and it seems to be the site to use these days. |

http://www.maryhouse.com/majesty.htm Saw this place on a recent (last month) visit to Cape May. Half a block from the beach, in a quiet neighborhood setting, but still within walking distance to all the fun "downtown" historic Cape May attractions. If I were interested in getting together a big group of folks I'd rent it myself. Maybe some day! Don't know what the availabilty is, because I think most places are rented by now, but it can't hurt to check. The main website www.maryhouse.com has other properties as well. Personally, Cape May is my very favorite NJ shore destination. A historic downtown with the most spectacular victorian architecture, lots of fun things for kiddies, nature preserves, nice beach, plenty of good food, an open air pedestrian shopping mall. We're renting a little cottage on Cape May Point for a week in August and I can't wait! |

Great suggestions guys, keep 'em coming! On further discussion it looks like we're wanting a beach locale, so unfortunately landlocked Vermont is out. But there are some good shore listings on VRBO, thanks for that link! And Wendy, that Cape May house looks BEAUTIFUL, but it is indeed book and is also way out of our budget anyway. *sigh* Given the late date I'm thinking it might be best at this point to just call up a realtor and see what's still available. Anyone in particular you guys could recommend? I'm now targeting LBI and Cape May, but am also open to other suggestions . . . |

www.sticksanddirt.com We used Heijung (pronounced Hey-zhung) Park-Colameco. She is a friend of a friend, and a former Maplewood resident. She was very helpful. Don't know how much will be available at this "late" date (we booked last August ), but it's worth a try. |

Amamdacat, With Lake Bomoseen, Lake St Catharine, and about a dozen other lakes between Bennington and Castleton, VT, all with lakeside rentals available, I would not write off Southern Vermont on that score. |

What a name for a realty office, Wendy! Thanks for the tip. Innis, I'd love to do a lake vacation but the Mainers in our party have a family lake camp on the Pemaquid Peninsula so they'd prefer something different on this trip, something they can't get in Maine. Dunes, warmish salt water, minigolf, maybe a boardwalk nearby. The Jersey Shore really would be perfect! How about LBI, folks? Anyone have a realtor they use there? |

Did you try a google search of major realtors in LBI. I think most big ones, like Weichert, have offices that handle summer rentals in the beach communities. That would be where I'd start. Found this when I tried: http://www.weichertlbi.com/ |

LBI is great. We stay in Barnegat Light, which is quiet and very family friendly. I use Inman Realty there. PL me if you want specifics. Note that the differing rates don't necessarily reflect the quality of house. It has more to do with location and easy beach access. Also, I recommend you book soon. http://inmanlbi.com/ |

Avalon is beautiful too. It is more for quiet families and slow moving cars. There is a little boardwalk but it is very small good for young kids. |

Interstingly enough, just had to cancel a reservation for a beach house (sleeps 11) in Wildwood, NJ. The place looks really nice and the owner, Tim Connors, was super helpful. Here's a link: www.wildwoodbeachhouse.com Good luck. |
