Dasti's in Maplewood was closed by court order on March 7th. There's a notice on the door. Looks like an opportunity for a great new eating spot in Maplewood. |

What was the court order for? Health violations or legal? |

Do you know 100% for a fact when the Indian restaurant is opening up? I don't think I can wait. |

Are you kidding? There was a long thread just recently where someone stated that supposedly an Indian restaurant was moving into where Dasti's was. |

Maplewoody - there's a thread near the bottom of the page about "why no Indian food" that mentions it. I hadn't read it until I saw Alley's post above. (and I can't get it to link. My computer is acting funky this morning). |

I think a decent Mediterranean restaurant would do quite well in that space. Humus, kabobs, falafel, good shepherd's salad with fresh feta... now that I could eat once a week! |

How about Thai? Actually, there is this fantastic vegetarian restaurant in Asheville, North Carolina called The Laughing Seed. I'm not even a vegetarian and I love it. Maybe someone could franchise it? I just know it would be a huge hit. Anything good would be a huge hit. Why is that so difficult? Reasonable and delicious. Please... |

I always wonder why dinner can't be reasonable around here. My guess is the rent, AND because we are willing to pay it. Whenever I compare a cheap food place in the city to expensive (usually mediocre) food around here, someone invariably talks about how in the city there are more customers. The theory goes on to discuss "economies of scale", expensive rents in the village or some other nonsense and that food just has to cost more here. I'm not sure I'm buying it but until someone breaks the mold and shows that it can be done, we are stuck with $20 mediocre pasta dishes, and $15 indian and thai entrees. |

Alley, I think it's the rent. Rumor has it that the owners are seeking $5500 a month for the now-closed frame shop. Same rumor says that it can't be a food establishment. |

I would wish for a Starbucks in a third of it, Vito's Hoboken Deli in the next third, and a butcher in the other third (maybe it's not that big).

Oh god, we need a Starbucks, like we need a hole in the head. Not to mention we have an Indian restaurant moving in, what is all this discussion about? |

Bak, When I was on vacation in the Virgin Islands a few weeks ago, an elderly man struck up a conversation with me while we were waiting to be seated for dinner. Turns out his father used to own a butcher shop in Maplewood Village. He grew up right down the street from where I live now, and he had lots of stories of what it used to be like around here. The world just keeps getting smaller and smaller. |
