Any ideas? Maybe I'll just attempt to make some.

I was just in a place in Lawrenceville that sold it this past weekend, but it was way far from here. If you want the name of the place, i have a bag of chocolate covered pretzels from there downstairs and i can look it up. Otherwise, maybe try Brummer's Chocolates in Westfield? Thomas Sweet in New Brunswick? Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory at Jersey Gardens? All are about 20 minutes away. Or call Food Of Our Own Design and ask them if they can recommend anywhere closer. |

My Irish husband swears that there is no such thing. He said the closest thing he can think of is fried potatoes - boiled potatoes, sliced and fried. I said, "but there's no sugar in that, how can it be candy?" and he said something to the effect of "what? who'd put sugar on a potato? Maybe some dumb Yank." I am sure that this is not helpful.... but I am kind of curious about what this is, actually. |

They sell it down the shore at all those Fudge and candy shops. But that does you no good now, Sorry. I tasted it once and it has the texture of marzipan but instead of an almond flavor had a kind of coconut flavor. |

Yeah, the ones i tasted at the place in Lawrenceville were about half the size of your thumb. The candy itself is made from some sort of coconut cream mixture, and then it's rolled in cinnamon to make it look like a little potato. |

They're very easy to make (and really bad for the waistline). Also, I've always referred to them as Irish Potatoes. The context makes it clear that you're not talking about the starchy ones. Here's one recipe: 2 lbs powdered sugar ("10X" powdered) 1/4 lb butter (1 stick - do NOT substitute margarine) 8 oz cream cheese (do NOT substitute fat-free or lowfat) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 10-12 oz. coconut ((shredded, sweetened - omit to make 'plain' butter cream candies) cinnamon Blend powdered sugar, salt, butter, and cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla and blend. Add coconut and stir in completely. Chill mixture (several hours in refrigerator, covered - this step is optional, but helps the 'ball making'). Roll into balls - do NOT round perfectly (imperfections make the candy look more like potatoes). Chill result (they will 'weep' into the cinnamon if too warm). Serve cool or room temperature. Makes 4 lbs. Enjoy!!!

Thank you for all the suggestions! I think I will make them. My husband's mother used to always buy them for him for St. Patrick's Day. He swears she bought them at the Acme (in south Jersey). For inquiring minds.... http://tinyurl.com/oy98e |

There is a large Irish community in Pearl River, NY, just over the border from Montvale. You may be able to find some imported Irish candies and such there--if you call the supermarkets there you can find out whether it's worth the trip. I googled on "10965 supermarkets" and found three listed with phone numbers (2 of the 3 are actually in Pearl River). Shop Rite of Pearl River - 0.2 miles SE - 26 N Middletown Rd, Pearl River - (845) 735-4871 K P Food Mart - 0.4 miles SW - 27 N Main St, Pearl River - (845) 735-1433 |
