My dad & stepmom want to to do dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in the city on a Friday night. Keep in mind that this is "moderate" as defined by Ohio standards.

Asian & Latin cuisine are out ( my faves). I'd like to stay away from the theater district.

Must take reservations and credit cards. Jeans, sweater and loafers kind of place. Funky and inexpensive is OK, too. They like having "New York Experiences".

Suggestions?

A moderately priced restaurant is more desirable than one which has been riced.

I like Rain. And they have plenty of rice there, too.

Yes, except Rain is Vietnamese. I would think that qualifies as Asian.

Can't think of anything at the moment; will post if I do. I'm sure plenty of good suggestions will come along soon.

Oops. I need more coffee or something.

There's a Spanish place on 58th, either between 6th and 7th or between 7th and 8th, which is good and reasonable.

Mario Batali's OTTO (8th Street, off 5th Ave). Phenomenal pasta, tasty pizza, great wine list, funky atmosphere, and the prices are tough to beat.

Save room for the olive oil gelato. I know it sounds wrong, but it must be tasted to be believed... :-)

everything I want to recommend is latin or asian!
I keep typing and erasing, typing and erasing!

Just went with VIG and 3 other couples to a cute italian place on W 14th St. very inexpensive, good food ($77/couple with apps, wine and dessert) Mr VIG's hubby and 2 other people got sick on one dish, but I had a great meal and am even going back tonight! [I'll let you know if I have regrets tomorrow]

funky recommendations:

Cafe Mogodor in the East Village
Katz's
R.U.B. (Righteous Urban Barbecue) -just voted top BBQ in NY by NY Mag

Brian- thanks! I could not for the life of me remember the name. I couldn't get Babbo out of my head.

Pippi - I'll be anxious to hear about yuour experience, but I'm a little skeptical about your initial recommendation!

I can't believe you're going back Pippi!!!

I found it mediocre at best. My lobster ravioli was edible, nothing more. There were prefeb buscuits on the table instead of Italian bread! Mr Vig HATED it for obvious reasons.

I did like the salad but it wasn't the salad we ordered, so...

I certainly hope you're smart enough to not order the Bisteca!

If your looking for funky and reasonable try Cafe Orlin in the East Village. Very reasonable and a great scene. They don't take reservations, but I haven't ever had trouble getting a table.

VIG
stacy said she would go back too, FWIW. Notehead really liked his dish too. I had a delicious meal the first time and a fine meal this time, too. I tried a companions dish and pronounced it "yummy".

that said, GT, I think we have better italian around here. Would recommend, but if you are looking for a quintessential funky NY dining experience, this ain't it.

another italian place I really liked is 'inoteca. It's on the lower east side and definitely more interesting than Primitivo.

does no asian mean no Indian?

I recommend Metsovo on the Upper West side if Greek is acceptable

For yummy inexpensive french bistro in the tres chic west village try Tartine

You can get a very reasonable meal at

Ralph's Italian Restaurant Cuisine : Italian
Entree Price : $8-14
Address : 862 9th Ave @ 56th St
Phone : 212-581-2283

-------------------------------------------------
Review: (from a NY restaurants website)
Have been going to Ralph's for over thirty years, under many owners. These owners are the best since the originals. They professionally serve regional Italian foods that actually taste terrific. They will make you and your guests also feel good about the experience. More than many new 9th Avenue "neighborhood" places can do with their attitudes and expense account charges.

Well, Otto was nixed because the menu "isn't varied enough". I like Cafe Orlin, but it's not everyone else's style. ("What do you mean it's vegan"?)

My brother and I wanted to go to The Spotted Pig, but dthe parents chose Tribeca Grill. Good, safe, something "NYish".

greenetree - enjoy your meal!
FWIW, I don't personally find Tribeca Grill "moderate". Did you change criteria, or does it meet your description of "moderate"? just curious....

I set "moderate" at $50ish per person. In Manhattan, that's gonna have to do. Especially if we want "more extensive" and "not weird" in the same place.

Since we have to go out to the Hamptons the next morning, what I'd really like is to have them come out here & go to Antonella's.

I tried Lupa first - no reservations available. I, too, thought that it would be perfect.

$50-ish per pax opens up a lot of options.

Patsy's italian on 56th; 7th & Broadway; has old school italian which should appeal to out of towners but is not touristy since it is good.

ViceVersa on 51st; 8th & 9th Ave; is very nice but not uptight. New continental food. Near theater district if they are doing something around there.

But yeah... if you're cutting out Asian and Latin cuisines, you're cutting out a lot of world class gourmet in NYC - a lot of which are not even expensive.
