Inspired by the recent Heart & Soul outing - I am going to start planning similar events with MOL sponsors. ie: Cent'Anni, Caribbean Cuisine, St. James, Samurai Sushi, Here's To The Arts Cafe, etc. Possibly have one every other week. Stay tuned!

 Jamie:

I just read JTA's post on another thread and she has a point regarding MOL posters and/or family members who may have food allergies/sensitivities and/or be on a special diet for medical reasons.

Would it be possible to ask the restauranteurs of the locations of future MOL dining gatherings to include at something appropriate for: vegetarians, diabetics, persons on a low cholesterol diet, etc.?

This would help to make the gatherings more inclusive in terms of who could come and enjoy the meal as well as the great company and would help to boost that restaurant's customer base in the community.

 Thanks.

jamie, while I think what you have proposed is a great idea, I think the reason for the Heart and Soul f2f and for the next one which Mem will be organizing was to help out a business we want to succeed by all measures by showing our support with our wallets and our words of support both before the dinner, during it and after. As you may know, the owners of Bunny's and H2TA were even there that night, because of this.

I don't mean to imply that we shouldn't support any of the restaurants you named above or other businesses for that matter who advertise on MOL. We just should be clear about our goals and be fair to all of them.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't put St James' Gate or even C'entanni in the same category of "spreading the wealth" as I would Heart and Soul and perhaps Caribbean Cuisine and H2TA.

That being said, I'm usually up for going anywhere to meet my MOL friends f2f.

I am with you Wendy...the whole purpose of last Wednesday I think was to support a local business who has great quality food but for whatever reason, perhaps location, has been having a hard time making a go of it....This restaurant is not on a main drag that brings in walk in traffic like some of the others mentioned above...However, I am up for wherever it is that there is a f2f as well.

I'm all for the f2f's at Jesse's and I would have been there if I didn't have a prior commitment.

But since MOL runs pretty much on advertising, I feel a need to voice support for those who have supported us. I think it would be in fairness to those places that have been on MOL for many years to hold a f2f at their establishment.

 Jamie:

If a business such as St James Gate already has lines out the door waiting to get in most evenings, they are less likely to be able to provide seating for the number of diners an MOL face to face could generate without disadvantaging their regular customers who are not MOL regulars.

On the other hand there are a number of local restaurants which advertise on MOL who could use the business and like Chef Jesse would be happy to host an MOL-specific event. Don't think it would be a good idea to start with such establishments and see how things develop?

I'd also ensure that the restaurant can acommodate the following MOL dietary restrictions:

 kosher
 Weight Watchers dieters
 Atkins dieters
 South Beach dieters
 Peanut allergies or intolerances
 MSG allergies
 ADD & ADHD
 Additive-free diet
 Lactose Intolerances
 Colitis
 Corn allergy or intolerance
 Crohn's Disease
 Egg allergy or intolerance
 Gluten-free/Casein-free diet
 Gluten intolerance
 Hypoglycemia
 Irritable Bowel Syndrome
 Low carbohydrate diet
 Low protein diet
 Low sugar/sugar-free diet
 MSG-free diet
 PKU
 Political correctism
 Knee-jerk liberalism
 Religious rightism
 Soy allergy or intolerance
 Vegetarian or Vegan diet
 Wheat allergy or intolerance
 Yeast-free diet

Or, those people with special needs can come and eat what they can and deal with it.

I like Joe's idea the best!

Mr. T has a point. As someone with dietary needs, I deal or don't go. Asking a local place to accomodate a myriad of needs which may mean altering the usual menus defeats the purpose of economic support.

... and I think I'll put in my 2 cents.

Jamie, I think you have a great idea, but rather than just promote restaurants, why not arrange something with "all" your advertisers? I'm thinking about your advertisers picking a specific day and time (say a two hour slot) every week that would be advertised by both you and your advertiser as "MOL F2F Discount Meeting Places"...

As we all know it's hard to find a time and place to get a good turn out of Molers. This idea would help that problem if we had a number of regular weekly meeting places in M/SO (not unlike weekly Rotary meetings; you see the signs coming into every town around the world showing day, place, and times of the meetings.) where Molers can show up wearing their "Moler Badges" and expect to find other Molers. Of course the merchants would offer a discount at those special set times for these Molers who are wearing their badges. Let me draw this out a little more for you….

 1. Registered Molers with passwords can request a badge from MOL for a $10 annual charge. The badge would have the logo and the year it was good for, no personal name, but maybe a place to put one if the member wanted to.

 2. Advertisers in turn can request a window sticker showing that they are an "Official MOL Meeting Place" for an annual charge as well. There would also be a sign announcing the day and times of the weekly meetings and that Molers wearing their badge would receive whatever discount during that time period.

 3. Say restaurants like the “Gate” picked an off time, maybe every Tuesday at noon until 2PM, and HTTA picked every Monday night from 7PM to 9PM; Bunny’s on Sundays 2PM to 4PM, and so on. You get the idea. The weekly date, time, and discount would be made up by the advertisers. First come first serve on the days and times with no two the same ...

 4. This could also apply to other merchants; say the Chelsea Set had every Monday from 10AM until 2PM for 20 percent discounts on hair cuts, or what ever for those Molers wearing their badges. The Maplewood movies a bag of free popcorn on Sundays for the evening show. The possibilities are endless.

In addition, you can still promote a special evening every month to feature a main F2F as well. The idea here is Molers would get discounts and shop at times and places where they can share time with their on-line friends. The merchants could measure the value of their advertising and also benefit by the showing their additional support to the MOL community. And, our world would be a better place.......... for everyone! ;-)

I would recommend that MOL publish an on-line list of the meeting places and times as well. This idea of yours Jamie can be made to be a win, win, win for everyone. Good luck pal...
