Pretty soon the new 'diner' will open where the Blue Moon use to be. I have a feeling the new owners of the new diner read MOL. So, I think this might be a good time to share what we'd like to see the diner offer. If we're lucky, maybe some of the suggestions will become a reality!

I've read a number of times on MOL how our village is lacking in a place people can grab something quick on their way home from the train. Perhaps this is something the diner could offer? Or how about a nice hot egg sandwhich as you rush for the train in the morning?

How early would you like to see the diner open? How late would you like it to close? I'd love to have a 24 hour diner in town, but that will never happen.

I don't know when they will open in the mornings but Manny expects to stay open until 2 a.m at least on weekends.

I guess hours will expand or contract depending on amount of partonage.

JTA, if 24 hours is going to happen, I've got to think it'd be in SO because of proximity to Seton Hall....students there alone could support the place...

My two requests are as follows:
1) SAUSAGE BISCUITS AND GRAVY: My wife and I have missed this southern great ever since leaving Richmond.
2) Cream Chipped beef on Toasts: As close as we are to PA, why do all diners refuse to serve this PA Dutch classic?

My father's description of the Army's Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast was enough to stop me from enlisting.

Standard diner fare, including extended breakfast hours, would be just fine by me.

As long as it is not too expensive, students will be in there until 1:59 ... and begging you to stay open just a little later!

The poor college student will pay for food, but not $8 for a crappy burger.

The Village Diner will be open from 5AM to 10PM initially, and has already printed its menu.

The owner is a terrific guy, but, like Mr. Tony of THD, he's way too busy to read MOL -- at least during business hours. He's got a business to get off the ground, and, unlike the owners of some S.O. eateries (who put their businesses on autopilot so they can fill the Virtual Cafe with little witicisms), his time is pretty much spoken for.

If you wanna make a suggestion, do it directly. Get outta the house (or your office, if that's where you post from!?) and toddle down to Sloan street. Odds are he'll be there, and happy to hear your input.

I saw the menu and it is the standard menu as from most N.J. diners.

Apps.
Soup
Entres
meat
fish
pasta

Sandwiches
deserts
salads

and so forth.

I don't know if there is going to be a "specials" board. If so, that would be a welcome addition.

S.O. regs make 24/7 a no-no.

I'd love more fresh veggie options, some ethnic choices if the owner can do it athentically, good coffee, not Starbuck wannabees, and just good diner food. Hey Oracle, maybe you could share that Diner Book I gave ya with the owner if you ever come back from Boca! It was great visiting you in sunny SO. Fla.

LL: You and Lil LL perked up an otherwise ho-hum week. Do come back anytime, and I'll treat you to some "good diner food" at a local favorite of mine, the aptly-named "Boca Diner" (which, as you can see, is merely moments away from my humble digs):

BTW: I hope your daughter enjoys spending her easy winnings from our local shuffleboard courts, and that you'll bring her back with you when you come, so that a couple of the broken geriatric hearts she left down here can mend...

Go in peace.

About 5 miles south of there, on A1A, is our breakfast spot. I think it's called Kelly's and it's right on the Deerfield Beach fishing pier -- you can't miss it. We are cereal eaters and coffee drinkers but boy gets pancakes and they look good. You can't beat the location and the view.

Forgive me if i haven't followed this thread correctly, but is the owner of the soon-to-be-opened diner in the old Blue Moon space the same Manny who owns Manny's Texas Weiners across from Home Depot, as well as smaller Texas Weiners place near the Dancing Goat? If so, isn't that a little redundant to be operating two diner-ish breakfasty places right across the street from another? I think i might've missed something?

And as for helpful feedback, i stand by my suggestion that i gave in the Parkwood Diner thread last year. Spinning. dessert. cart.

Hey Oracle, just caught your post.

Wadda ya mean the geriatic broken hearts Lil MissLL left? I didn't leave a whole bunch? Everyone there kept calling me cookie and chickie and sweetie like I was edible. There must be one or two pining away for me as well!!

Manny owns T-Weiner in Union across from Home Depot but not the one across from Dancing Goat.

The new owner of what will be the Village Diner is Manny's brother, not Manny. The owner of the Texas Weiner up S.O.A. is actually Manny's sister. If this is all somewhat confusing to you, imagine how Manny's sister must feel.

Oracle - is Boca Diner really the best there is? I mean it's okay, but...the Tick-Tock it ain't.

Personally, I like the Green Owl, on Atlantic Ave.

Alg - thanks for the rec. We'll check it out.

AManda-FWIW-Manny's across from Home Depot is a best kept secret...we ate there at Christmas after buying our tree at HD. Surprisingly, we did not have hot dogs, but really good salads topped with chicken and fresh shrimp. The service was good and the restaurant very clean with decent prices. We have returned.
Debby- What do you like about the Tick Tock? I have met applicants there in the last year about three times and it is not the Tick Tock of my youth. The food was just okay and the prices were high for the quality of the meal. I would take Parkwood or Mapleleaf over the Tick Tock any day.

BGS - we lived in Clifton from 1992-97, and used to go all the time. Have you tried the Cobb Salad?

Debby: Actually, my favorite breakfast is a nice fresh piece of baguette and a Dunkin Donuts Caramel Frappacino while sitting in a quiet spot I know in Red Reef Park...

BTW: Not that one can trust the yammerings of drunken geriatrics on the shuffleboard court, but last week I heard a rumor that the Tick Tock Diner was closing. Is this true?

Go in peace.

Debby-No, I have not tried to Cobb Salad...when in diner land, I have always found the specials to be the way to go to get the freshest food...that was not our experience at the Tick Tock last year. Should I have to go back there, I will surely remember the Cobb Salad...
As I said previously, when I was younger, the Tick Tock was the place to go...but that was a long time ago.

My 2 cents on the Tick Tock - I use to eat there daily for a long time and loved it - went back recently and paid over $13.00 for a salad (threw some grilled chicken on top of an existing salad and didn't think to ask the waitress if the cost would go up by $6.00). After paying the bill I scanned down a menu and saw that they raised the prices substantially across the board. I can respect a price increase but there is so much one can pay for diner food imo.

I'll stick with the Cobb at the Parkwood.
