I would like to take my 5 1/2 year old, husband and myself to Washington DC sometime during week of April 8th for a few nights. Any suggestions on place to economically stay either in Washington DC or along Metro route like Maryland or Virginia? Thanks. Lucy |

Lucy - my (then) 10-year-old and I stayed at the Hotel Rouge (a Kimpton hotel) for 2 nights last year around this time - it was about $100 a night. Really cool rooms - big and sunny with lots of nice decorating touches and very clean. Some of my fave extras: free quart of Ben and Jerry's delivered to our room (with 2 spoons), cushy robes with leopard spots, right around the corner from really good local restuarants and an amazing Farmers' Market, 2 blocks from public trans, or an $8 cab ride to most museums. Sunday morning in the lobby they have really good cold pizza (focaccia really, but they call it pizza) and those drinks with champagne mixed with OJ - perfect fuel to help zone out on the train ride home.

Sounds great but cheapest rate I could find per night right now is $169 + tax. Lucy |

When I went to school down there, the affordable but decent non-chain place for parents to stay was the State Plaza hotel...walking distance to State Dept, the Mall, and the White House. Also walking distance to Metro (maybe about 10 minute walk). It was an apartment-style hotel with mini kithcens if I remember correctly. Check out their prices now. I don't know if they are still reasonable. Good luck! |

The Omni Shoreham and the adjacent Marriott Wardman Park are well-located right near the zoo, close to the Adams-Morgan district, and right on the red line. Prices are going to be all over the map depending on when in the week you go...remember to try both your AAA card and your Entertainment card to see what the best rates is they can offer. |

The week you want to go is a big school vacation week and the hotel rates in DC (we are planning to go too) are quite high. While price is a big consideration, I think you also need to think about where you want to stay (near the museums/monuments or in a specific neighborhood) and whether it's important that you're near a metro stop. Based on looking at the hotel rates for that week, I think $169 is a pretty good rate, if it's a decent hotel. I agree with Stuart about the AAA rates. I was able to book a cheaper AAA rate directly with a hotel. I also think that DC hotels are cheaper on the weekends than during the week. If you have flexibility, then I would go on the weekend instead. |

When we go with our four-year-old, we always stay in the Embassy Suites because they have a pool. The location is alright - sort of in between Foggy Bottom, Dupont and G'town. All three areas and two metro stops are in walking distance, but really, its all about the pool. Just that one hour we spend in it over the course of the weekend seems to make the trip. Free breakfast buffet and decent service. It's not particularly kid friendly, but my sis used to work at the Tabard Inn on N Street - a beautiful little place. |

Last year we stayed at the American Inn, I believe. Might be in Bethesda, I believe on Washington Ave. (Definitely a main strip.) It was $100 a night, there was a breakfast buffet, a small pool (possibly outdoor though, it was in an atrium) and there was a fun Mexican place right downstairs where we grabbed some Margaritas and quesadillas before meeting the family. My brother checked around, he needed to find something reasonable for a bunch of us, and it was the least expensive option. There was even free parking, which was such a plus! |

Thanks for all your help. It seems the going rate is around $165+ up except for the State Plaza which is lower but no parking. I came up with a Courtyard on the metro line in VA 20 minutes from downtown Washington with pool that we will try. Any suggestions for great ethnic food in DC or VA we can take a 5 1/2 year old to? Lucy, I posted a similar message..went with the Embassy Suites suggestion in February...the pool was a factor..it was a bit of a hike to the metro station but we also had a couple of decent places to eat in the area (one highly recommended pizza place that was on target). The best casual "ethnic" food we had there was the cafe at the American Indian Museum...it was fantastic with Native American fare broken into five regions of the Americas. Definitely a place to grab lunch if youre on The Mall (and a nicely done museum as well). The Omni Shoreham was in a very good location but when I looked at rates, there was nothing reasonable available. |

Don't know if Italian counts as ethnic, but I would definitely go to the 2 Amys on Wisconsin Ave., near the cathedral. It's phenomenal pizza--the second best I've ever had, after Peppe's in New Haven--in a casual but nice setting (definitely more of a restaurant than a typical pizza joint). And it's extremely kid friendly. They don't take reservations and it's very popular, so get there early or be prepared to wait. I usually like to go for lunch, when it's a little calmer. |
