I'm looking for someone who can make up a huge batch of arroz con pollo, platanos maduros and a big tres leches cake for a party. Any ideas? I figure there have to be great places in Orange/Newark, but I can't find them on my own.

Thanks in advance!

My wife. She's from the region and specializes in comidas criollo, but unfortunately she's not in business. There is not very much of this sort of thing right around here, but it is easily found in Elizabeth, Passaic, Jersey City and especially Union City. There is also a pretty good Dominican place in Secaucus called La Estrella del Caribe on Route 3 East service road.

I love the stuff.

If you have questions about types of foods to ask for to put together an authentic Latin/Caribbena feast, I'll get Lissette to make a few suggestions.

Not quite the same thing but there is a costa rican luncheonette on Springfield ave, same side of the street as the library near Burnett I think.
Perhaps you could see what dishes they could do - if they do any catering at all. Also there is a new business on Springfield called Homestyle Cuisine (I think), They seem to do a varied array of ethnic dishes. Try speaking to them.

There's a restaurant in Montclair called Cuban Joe's - it's on Bloomfield Ave near the movie theater

Latin of the style in question is hard to come by around here. I love it and wish this wasn't so.

Try Miriam's in Orange on Valley Road for a variation on the theme; roasted chickens, rice, not sure re platanos, stuffed potatoes and tamales are yummy.

Caribbean Cuisine on 1st St. in S.O. is wonderful Trinidadian food, nice people and reasonable cost; will host at restaurant or cater and I've had a party there that was huge success.

Let us know what you do, please!

Be well and eat well, all.

David

Sounds to me like there is a business opportunity here for latino food. My speciality is Puerto Rican cooking but I'm not in business--perhaps I should be. Pathmark's deli makes platanos maduros and the tres leches cake is easy to make. I just made one this weekend from a recipe I got from Magnolia sweetened condensed milk and everyone raved about it. It was as good as one I had in a latin restaurant last week. As for the arroz con pollo, perhaps a restaurant in town can try to make it for you. The Village Trattoria has many latino cooks who could probably cook up a mean one.

If all else fails, Manhattan is a short train ride away. You'll find plenty of latino restaurants--probably closer than any of the other locations. Good luck and enjoy.
