Formerly the Sage Cafe on Maplewood Avenue, next to the Village Trattoria and across Highland Ave (?) from the bank.

(I never can remember the names of those side streets in the village.)

How is it different from what it was before? Is it a bakery, too? Is there sit-down? How do they differ from Village Coffee?

they offer some asian type of food & offer bakery goods. - the problem is, that none of it's any good. -well, i should not say that b/c i've never had their asian food. it just seems too lost, no sense of what it wants to be known as. village coffee is great in my opinion. i think of that place more as a good place for breakfast goods & coffee. although, i really don't love their indian food. i have to also add that i think it's a little odd that they also sell indian food there (bakery & indian food restaurant?) if the indian food was great, i'm sure i wouldn't even have added this part. anyway, going back to edith's...i am also disappointed b/c they have great real estate there on the corner & there's never anyone in there. - in my opinion, the reason i listed above is why. it just can't figure out what it wants to be.

That location is about the best darned spot in the village for a real pastry shop.

I even mentioned to the guy at Crane's that he should find a way to get the lease and turn it into "Balthazar/Sullivan Street West" complete with rosemary foccacia, pain au chocolat, brioche, baguettes etc.

I also feel strongly that no matter what the air conditioning costs are, take the black film off of the windows!
It's like a porn shop..I have no idea what is going on inside and I am not going to allow myself to be surprised.
I would like to know, at a glance, whether the "goods" on the shelf look good. I find it awkward to go in - look at the stuff and realize there is not a single thing I would like to buy.

I think that is the best suggestion I have EVERY HEARD on MOL. And if they had Sunday hours, I would be the happiest person.

Alleygater,

I am no businessman but I am a very well informed customer. I know what this town needs - logistically, and what we could support. Just over four years ago I made a fuss that we needed a place to get a burger and a beer with our kids. I am not going to say it was my idea...but the pub came to town and has been extremely well received.

I am not kidding about the need for a butcher and a baker.
My dream for Maplewood village is for Freeman's to expand it's business (and space) and become the purveyor of fine meats as well as seafood - much like Citarella in NYC. I also envision a fine bakery in the spot formerly know as Sweets and Treats. I could care less if I never see another Black and WHite cookie - yech! Give me fine baked goods and fresh bread and I will travel there every day.

kmk,

a friend of mine considered the Sweets and Treats space when it was S&T for an artisenal bakery. He successfully sells a range of baked goods through the NYC Farmers Markets (Not Just Rugelach), was trained as a chef and baker in France, and has since opened a more "traditional bakery" in another town in NJ. At the time, the rent concerned him as well as uncertainty of when the space would be available. It's too bad, because he really liked the feel of the Village and was a big fan of some of the restaurants here.

Remember when Mapleleaf was located there? You knew what to expect when you went in there and the breakfast eggs and potatos were great. I second the reason for failure in the above post that expressed reluctance to go in, look, find nothing of interest and then leave.

Yeah, an artisan bakery would be wonderful.
