I have tequila, triple sec, margarita mix, ice and a blender. My margueritas are not turning out like those at East LA (Hoboken). Any recipes or suggestions???

Get rid of the margarita mix!
Use limeade frozen concentrate instead.
My husband has some perfect proportions - for margaritas (and otherwise!)
I will get them.

I think limeade can be a bit on the sweet side.
You want real margaritas?
Get a bag of real limes and start squeezing.
Add sugar and ice to taste.
Triple sec and tequilla to follow.

If I remember the East L.A. margarites right, then forget anything but the Tequila and the ice.

I think a spash of Cointreau or Grand Marnier is nice. I've used & liked the margarita mix from Williams-Sonoma.

I'd really have to taste what you are making to give more helpful info!

BGS,

It is not advisable to consume raw eggs. Salmonella, ya know. Besides, yuck!

Soulful, why were you making margaritas at 10:00 in the morning? And why didn't you invite me?

From David Rosengarten's TASTE cookbook, it's so easy I have it memorized:
1/3 of each
-Triple Sec or Cointreau,
-Tequila (I think he recs some Agave something or other, says "gold" is simply caramel coloring and a waste of money for not a great product, I guess it depends how bad a hangover you want!)
-fresh squeezed lime juice

I serve them on the rocks with a little salt, don't like the brain freeze!

Mmmm, summer's almost here...

East LA-Now that brings back memories. The key ingredient is heroin. That's why the sign says the limit is 3.

Aquaman, I always give my guests the choice of with egg white or without...
It gives this recipe "body"...
No one has ever gotten sick from it.
Thanks for the reminder....

So the disclaimer for my recipe should be:
Drink at your own risk if original recipe is followed.

BGS,
Do you remeber Orange Julius? I think powdered egg white may have been their secret ingredient...I remember my dad being on a mission to figure out the recipe.
I wonder if cream of tartar would do the same thing?

Doulamomma...I sure do remember Orange Julius...Used to drink that at the old Madison Square Garden venues during Knick games (many many years ago)...Cream of tartar is a stiffening agent but...for me egg white is fine...I think that liquor will kill anything evil lurking in the raw egg...
If you find a recipe for the Julius please share...what memories!!

OK our recipe is identical to the one BGS posted - just no egg.
We may have to try that next!

I concur w/ purists, no mixes or ades, just lime juice with the other ingredients. SHH, I also fear the freeeeeze and do rocks/salt as well. Btw, it's all agave, Rosengarten is surely saying use silver or unaged tequila for margaritas and I agree.

Drink well and be well, all.

David

PS Toro Loco at least at the bar will make a REAL one like this and they're delicious.

Mr. T.- Lay in some Bacardi Margarita Mix concentrate from your frozen food section. Add tequila, triple-sec and some Rose's Lime Juice. Blend with ice. If you just want easy margaritas while grilling they are just fine.

Found an Orange Julius stand in a mall somewhere in Pennsylvania. I couldn't believe they are still around!
