Was on Sprinfield Avenue the other day, near the Burger King, and smelled this tatsy aroma of BBQ coming from a large Burnett BBQ building. Has anyone tried Burnett BBQ? Is this a new location or have they moved?

I think they opened this location last year. Be advised it is NOT southern BBQ (to my husband's initial dismay) but it is very good, reasonably priced and the portions are huge.

Burnett is great. It's Portuguese BBQ. Their first location was a take-out on Burnett in Union (still there) and the line was always out the door.

Do tell! What exactly is Portguese BBQ? I'm assuming there's a big difference b'twn this and Southern? My taste buds are dancing already!

It's similar to Spanish. They do quite the tasty garlic and chicken/shrimp/whatever. I am blanking on the rest of the menu. I don't think that you will find any "red sauce" southern-type stuff there. Hismom is quite right about the portion sizes.

We've been there a few times - it's pretty nice. Tables are well-spaced, so you can talk in peace. They tend to get large family groups, so you may have some small kids there. On the other hand, if you are looking for a nice, kid-friendly place, this should be on your list. They have a salad bar, which can get a bit wilted as the evening goes on, but the food is good. I usually have the shrimp or chicken and I've always been happy. My husband likes the dishes with chorizos and the paella, and he has never been unhappy with the food. Portions are enormous, we always go home with enough for another meal or two. Prices are very reasonable and the wait staff is engagingly friendly.

My only complaint the last time we were there was that the lighting levels were so bright, it was like eating in a cafeteria. The lighting had always been softer before that. Don't know if it's still as bright.

It's BYOB, by the way.

They also have an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet on M-F. It's very inexpensive, and a great way to try it out if you've never been there.

I'd give Burnett BBQ a respectable OK at any of its locations.

We went one Saturday night when it was too rainy and wet to travel to Newark or Harrison for S-P food. We found the atmosphere calm, the service just ok, the choices good but the food only passable. Perhaps we were comparing it to much to Iberia, Seabra's or Spanish Pavillion. We haven't been back but with great recommendations might be willing to try it again. We had had food from the original Burnett BBQ and it really didn't taste the same.

Msg- you can't compare Burnett to the Argentinian places in Newark. Different class of cooking. IMHO.

For $25 you and your guest will get more food than you can possibly eat. I love the Chicken Francaise. The ribs don't do anything for me but others like them. I have friends who rave about the steak. It's a great place to go with friends with some wine/beer on a Friday night.

I'm not sure how anyone can like Seabras...The place is always a freakin zoo, and the food, especially the quality of the meat is not very good.

Are you speaking of Seabras Rodizio near NJPAC or Seabras on Lafayette (?) Street?

I think Burnett is ok, but the real hidden* gem on Springfield Ave. is Nunzio's, just down the street from Burnett. Virtually an identical menu, but, in my opinion, the food at Nunzio's is much better. Everything is great there -- beef, chicken pork, salmon. Plus it's great to wait for your order while inhaling all that flavor.

* I say "hidden" gem because of course the crown jewel of Springfield Avenue is Church's Kitchen. But I think at this point enough people know about it that you can't exactly call it undiscovered.

The Rodizio on 21, sorry Barbara, I go past the other one all the time, but I forgot about it :-) The Seabra's Supermarket is on Lafayette, the Seabra's Marisquera is on Madison.

Burnett BBQ also has a patio in the back for dining outside (now that the weather is getting nicer!)

Gregor- We used to love the 21 spot...has it changed with the new construction going on there??? We always used to go there before performances at the PAC and Seabra's had a van that they used to jitney patrons to the performance and pick us up afterwards...it was so convenient.
Sorry to hear that the quality is not there anymore.
Thanks for the heads-up.

I'm going to second Nunzios - it's new, on Springfield Avenue, and I stopped there to pick up dinner because the smell was DEVASTATING - I thought it was better than Burnett, which I also like.... rice was better, too.

The shrimp and rice is better too at Nunzio's. But I wouldn't call it NEW. It's been around for quite some time now.

BGS - I'm sorry to disagree with you but we were at Seabra's 21 last Saturday night and the rodezio was wonderful. The meats were tender and plentiful. The selections were good. Alligator, not tough, tender, Buffalo, sirloin, filet, bacon wrapped chicken and much more. Hot and crispy potatoes and a wonderful salad bar. The white sangria is very refreshing. You don't have to get there through the construction. You just go 280 to Harrison and go over the bridge. Fast trip. Nice parking lot. Fun time especially with a group of people. Try it again soon. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! By the way, the grilled, cinnamon sprinkled pineapple is a real treat and a nice end to the meal.

I have been to Seabra's. Pretty Good. Not great.

But the price was right...something like $23.

Have been to Churrascaria Plataforma on 50th in Manhattan. Out of this world. (But double the price of Seabra's.) The selection of meats was wider and in some cases tastier.

msg- I am the one that likes Seabra's 21- it is Gregor that thinks that it is a zoo etc. I am glad to know that the food is still good...we have not been there recently and will put it back on the list.
Thanks msg for the affirmation.

I have a cheap friend who insists on going there because of the price...The last 3 or 4 times I've been there the meat has been bad. Not average, but B-A-D. I have since discovered the place on Adams St. (name temporarily escapes me) which is the same price but much better food/atmosphere. I will never go back to Seabra's 21 for Rodizio.

Gregor- I am so curious...why would you go back to a restaurant 3 or 4 times if the food was bad???

masochism? My friend is an attorney who works right in that area, so it was convenient to meet there.
