In addition to Freemans, what are other places to buy fish within 15 minutes drive of M/SO? Ideally, non-supermarket but if you know a good dept. in one, let me know. Thanks and be well, all. David |

I find the selection and prices at Whole Foods rather hit or miss, though the quality is very good. Lately, I've been very impressed with the fish dept. at the Shoprite in... ohhh which town is it??? It's the one on Morris Ave. across from Panera - the one that just got renovated. Would that be Short Hills? Someone help me out here... Anyway, that fish dept. has got a wonderful selection, good quality, and really good prices. I bought some of the most delicious wild salmon there not long ago. |

I second that ShopRite..those guys know their stuff...and they get every Friday, fresh shrimp...almost all commercially sold shrimp in this country is previously frozen, so to get it actually fresh and not previously frozen is rare. You can always try the Asian markets for their fish counter too. |

Thanks, all. I agree w/ Dego re WF and I agree w/ all re Shoprite SH. I NEED BONED SHAD AND SHAD ROE!!! At Shoprite they've had it but don't now (boned shad, they do have roe); Freemans tells me to order it which I don't want to do and WF says their supplier says quality is low and price is high...imagine what that must mean?? Are there any fish markets (like Freemans or bigger), non-supermarket within say, 20 minutes drive of here? Not NYC, btw. Be well and eat well, all. David |

would a sushi place be willing to sell some? I buy pizza dough from the pizza place...seems like a similar idea.

David, I know there's on on Stuyvesant St. in Union...just down the street from Van Gogh's ear. I have never been but I had neighbors who used to buy fish there. There's also one on Springfield, right next to the new Spring Fields market, but I have never been in there. |

I know the two Asian markets on ROute 22 have large fish selections. Captain Fresh has a larger selection than AFC (Asian Food Center) if I remember correctly. Kam Man on Route 10 is pretty good too. |

Captain Fresh is wonderful for live lobsters too...you cannot beat the prices!! Great A(a)sian market too (can't be too PC) ...it is down on 22 in front of BJ's in Watchung. About 25 minutes or so from Maplewood depending on how you go and what the traffic is like.

Dego Diva, that Shop-Rite is actually in Springfield, as is the adjacent Bed Bath and Beyond. I bought some wonderful Alaskan wild salmon at the Shop-Rite in Millburn (off Willow St.), so the chain's fish buyers must be doing something right--and the prices are reasonable. I've also had some good fish from King's. I think Freeman's is still the best of the choices, though! |

doulamamma- Never thought about buying pizza dough from a pizza place. If you don't mind sharing how much do you buy and how much does it cost? DO you recommend a specific pizza place? Thanks, |

you can also buy pizza dough at DiPietro's, Shop-Rite, probably other supermarkets and Italian specialty stores. DiPietro's...mmmm...may need to go back there today! |

Arsenal, I buy it fresh (not frozen) to use that day from the pizza place next to the movie theatre (we call it "Mr. Vinny's" - I forget the real name) & it's about $3 - I usually get two at a time...think I've also gotten it at Arturos...I think I only ever had one place (in the West Village) give me a hard time...most places have been happy to sell it. Enjoy! |

I bought pizza dough from Arturo's last night. It cost $3 for enough dough for a pizza for two. It made a delicious pizza. |

I feel too guilty buying the dough from the pizza places. The dough in the freezer at Kings or ShopRite (same stuff) is great and you get 2 balls of dough for about $1.50. Cheapest (and most fun!) meal for the family. |

There is a fish market on Springfield Ave that I keep passing but have never been in. Any insight? |

6yearrez, I didn't think much of it. Went twice. Kinda dingey, didn't seem ultra clean or what I was expecting of a fish store. For the heck of it, one time bought some fried shrimp to go. Pretty much the frozen cardboardy type. Speaking of fish, short of Legal Seafood, is there a nice ordinary fish restaurant anywhere nearby? A place that would serve the equivalent of Freeman's instore and Maplewood pool offerings? Family oriented, some plain, fresh offerings? A million years ago, my family would go to Snuffy's in Scotch Plains and get what I'm looking for. Not looking for something that's mostly Italian, or mostly Greek or what have you... |

Fish and family oriented might be a tough combo (outside of Red Lobster). If you don't mind driving, one of best places for "nice ordinary" fresh fish with a lot of choices and moderately priced is a place called the Sea Shack in Hackensack. Not sure it passes the family oriented test though. |

There's a relatively new restaurant out on Route 22 in Green Brook, called the Bonefish Grill (they have a website). It's part of a chain. I've never been there to eat, but it's on my list of places to try. The menu prices aren't posted on-line, but they have a children's menu, so that might be a good sign. I'll also sometimes go to the Red Lobster on Route 22 in Bridgewater, mainly since the one in Union has an hour-plus wait at just about any time of the day or night except maybe 3:30 in the afternoon. If Freeman's ever started a restaurant and could maintain the quality, they'd have people out the door! For some reason, good seafood restaurants are few in number. |
