I'm thinking of ordering a tray of lasagna, and maybe some meatballs and/or sausages and/or salad too, for babycat's first birthday party. I was thinking of using the Vilage Trattoria or Antonio's Mozarella Factory, but I've never had lasagna at either place, and since I'm not serving tons of food I want to make sure that what I do serve is absolutely delicious. Any suggestions? |

Amandacat, A great lasagna is just around the corner at Maplewood Pizza. Wifey and I picked up an order (not a tray mind you) from there a couple of weeks back. Typically, their lasagna is a beef sauce. This one was a spinach lasagna. A few bites into this we both realized that this is not what we ordered, but they aint getting it back. It was delicious. Of course don’t send your whacko husband by. His single slice, re-cooked fetish is a little hard to deal with. Come to think of it, on top of sending an email and follow-up letter to prospective employers, you’ll really standout if you deliver a Maplewood Pizza lasagna.

We ordered a tray of Ziti from the Village Trattoria for my son's first birthday. It was very good. I've never tried their lasagna. Let us know where you end up getting it, and how it was! |

I don't know if they do trays, but the absolute bestest lasagne available can be found at Libretti's on Nassau Street in Orange. It'd be worth it just to give 'em a call (973-673-5155) and find out. If not, how about Celentano's "Let's Eat" on Rte 10? -s. |

Hmmm, Maplewood Pizza's lasagna is good, Joe? We might have to give them a taste test this weekend and see for ourselves . . . And Soda, thanks for the tip about Libretti's; they do indeed sell lasagna by the tray, and the price is quite reasonable. It's good stuff? How about their meatballs? |

Just moved here...and thus a rookie when it comes to local cuisine...but I really like Maplewood Pizza lasagne. I have Lived here less than two months and my diet has disproportionately consisted of MW Lasagna. (I'm branching out see thread about Indian food). The sauce is great...spiced just right. Distinctly better than any lasagna I ever had in the city. |

Maplewood Pizza is one of those hidden treasures...a friend who does not cook much started coming to covered dish dinners at church with a pan of eggplant parm that was to die for. Eventually we found out that she takes her own baking dish to Maplewood Pizza and has them make up whatever she wants in her dish and she brings it to dinners.... I have stopped there more than once when there was just no parking in town and am glad that I remember to do so. Their food is really, really good. I am sure that their lasagna would be good because eggplant parm is so much harder to do right...Let us know what you end up doing and how it came out. Happy Holdiays! B |

amandacat: I can't say I've ever tried Libretti's meatballs, but I'll wager that they're excellent. The key thing I've always found true of the food there is the freshness you can taste in their ingredients. -s. |

Thanks for all the input, guys. I just put an order in at Maplewood Pizza (spinach lasagna per your recommendation, Joe!); couldn't beat the price or convenience and I've always loved anything I've ordered from there, so I figured it was worth a shot. I'll let you know how it goes . . . |

Just make sure you pick it up yourself. Don't send the spouse. They don't like the guy. He's a headcase. 5 Slices? Get a whole pie you freak! |

Dined last night at Terra. Ordered one of the night's "specials", a lasagne made with lentils, portabello, and some other stuff I can't recall (1/2 bottle of shiraz will do that...). It was awful. I don't mean to say that I think I made a bad choice in ordering it; on the menu, it read like it should be really good. But it was so overbaked and dried out that it had no delicacy or silkiness at all, and literally no flavor. It was like eating corrugated cardboard. I was very disappointed. But: I really enjoyed the black bean soup I started with, though. Very different take on a spanish classic... lighter and tangier than most, with just enough buttery taste to offset. BTW, Mrs. Soda loved her scallops. So, on to dessert: "I would be proud to partake of your Pecan Pie..." not...: The filling was great (a dollop of vanilla ice cream on the side didn't hurt, either), but the crust was impenetrable. I mean really uncuttable. Like titanium. So, another poor choice, I guess. Oh, and Mrs. Soda loved her creme brulee. And her decaf cappucino. My regular coffee was bitter (sigh). Will we go back? Of course. We love Peter, and, after all, we just walked in at nine on a Friday without a reservation, so the place obviously needs all the support we can offer. Consider this a supportive review. -s.

Soda: Does not sound supportive. What does arriving at nine pm without a reservation refer to? If your meal was that bad, did you speak to Pete about it? I would be curious as to his comments to you. I was there last week and had a very favorable experience. oots

Oots: Good question. I did not mention it to him. Pete's a sweetheart, and was clearly working shorthanded last night (so busy that he didn't even pick up the phone, which was why we couldn't make a reservation when we called 1/2 hour before arriving), so I decided to give him a pass at the time. Then, today, when I thought about it, I decided to post. I know he reads MOL on occasion, and I fully intend to try calling him a little later this afternoon with my feedback. He'll want to know, I'm pretty sure. I'm not looking for a free dessert or anything, and I won't candy-coat my remarks, but we really like him, and want Terra to thrive and be around for a long time. It's one of Mrs. Soda's favorite places, but last night's repast was so un-Terra-like for me that I wanted to vent a bit. I still think it was a supportive post, though. -s. BTW: Maybe I'll post his response later... |

Soda: btw-my better half had that same dish last week and thought it was delish! He (Pete) does have some unusual combinations (grits!?) I am more mainstream with my selections-though most sounded quite good. I hope to be back there real soon. oots |

Yeah. I'll probably stick with the braised short ribs myself... -s. BTW: Just called Pete and told him about the lasagne. He expressed his sorrow that I didn't enjoy it, and suggested that "maybe they left it in too long." I promised that we'd be back anyhow, and he thanked me for caring enough to call.

Planetary Alignment? Or Mis-alignment? Well, at least now I can put a face on Soda, instead of just an avatar! Obviously, I was quite dismayed when I received your phone call, as well as today when I got to read your post. I take this stuff pretty seriously. Yes, we were short-handed Friday night (and a busy Friday at that) leaving me waiting tables up front myself (something which I really prefer not to do on a w/e!), instead of being in the kitchen. Several people have really enjoyed both dishes, and I had a very serious talk with my help in "the back" about needing to maintain quality on EVERYTHING! And that includes if something gets burned or dried-out. "If you (staff) wouldn't want to eat it that way, neither will they (customers)." Yes, accidents happen, but they need to be set right. Feedback is always needed. (For obvious reasons, I would have preferred JUST the phone call, but I guess you have to be willing to take the good with the bad! ;-) ) So, in the name of making sure it doesn't happen again, I appreciate you letting me know. Pete PS. Hey, Grits are great! They're just Southern Polenta... but even tastier (hominy is the thing that makes tortillas, well, tortillas!)} |

Back to lasagna of the non-lentil variety . . . So, babycat's party was this weekend, and the food we ordered from Maplewood Pizza was a HUGE hit! The veggie lasagna was delicious, the guests couldn't stop commenting on it (and eating it -- we had very little leftover, alas), and the garlic sticks were out of this world, and an amazing bargain at only $10 (!!!) for a tray of, like, a zillion of them. The meatballs and sausage & peppers disappeared quickly too. Plus the folks there are such a pleasure to deal with. All in all, a great experience!!!!
