I need recommendations for an Indian restaurant on 6th St./surrounding area. We have frequented one (which we still love), but would like some alternatives - preferably a BYOB. So, whaddya say? |

The whole street used to be loaded witht them. Last time, i didn't enjoy Passage to India too much. Some of them have gone out of business. Also, consider the afgan restaurant on St. Marks place. Good and reasonable. |

The only Indian restaurant that comes to mind in that neighborhood is Madras Cafe. Excellent food. http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&neighborhoodid=0&cuisine id=39&restaurantid=2588&home=Y |

I'd recommend Brick Lane Curry House. They can do seriously spicy - even maintaining a hall of fame for those that can survive their "phaal". Don't worry, plenty of options for the less adventurous http://www.bricklanecurryhouse.com/ http://www.newyorkmetro.com/listings/restaurant/brick-lane-curry-house/ http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/36912282/new_york_between_1st_and_2nd_aven ue_s_ny/brick_lane_curry_house.html |

Haveli is like a proper meal, a serious step or two up in quality to the places on 6th street. Very good indeed. Having said that, I'm a sucker for Panna II on 1st Avenue. It's dirt cheap and garish as all get out, cramped like nobodies business, but the food is totally fine when you are looking for that sort of thing. |

Moving uptown a little bit, at E. 27th street and Lexington Avenue there is a fantastic Indian restaurant called Cardamomm. Definitely falls under the category of a "proper meal". The food is delectable, heavenly, satisfying...etc. Nice ambience, great service. If you happen to be in the city and are near this place, I highly recommend you check it out. Not as convenient as local Indian food, but very high quality. |

I strongly second Pana II!! It's right around the corner from 6th St., on 1st Ave. It's up a set of stairs, on the right side, but you can't miss it with all of the crazy lights flashing in the window. Don't be dragged in by their competitor on the left - they fight fiercly to get you in their door! Remember it's on your right. So when you walk in, you will be blown away by all the gawdy hanging lights and ornaments. You may even need to duck down a little to get to your table!! You'll be elbow to elbow with other patrons. Don't let any of this discourage you - the food is incredibly yummy, and the price is simply rock bottom. Usually we pay around $20 total for 4 people - and we walk away stuffed to the gills. Bring your own beer - there's a good deli on the corner with a large variety. Some of my favorite dishes: Chana Vasi with Poori Samosa The mixed appetizer plate Shrimp Korai Veggie Bhuna or Korma If you are looking for something a bit more upscale, no doubt about it, go to Haveli. Thanks, now I want Indian food!!

Another recommendation for Haveli - my wife took me there for my birthday a few years back. Really great food, good service, would definitely go back there.
